Ahead of the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™ in Australia and New Zealand, UN Women and FIFA have come together to champion gender equality in football and beyond. Discover more about this inspiring initiative!👇🏼 Through the Football Unites the World campaign, these esteemed organizations aim to shed light on the imperative to eliminate abuse and discrimination against women, both on and off the field. Even in today's world, women players still grapple with fewer professional opportunities, limited brand sponsorships, inadequate media coverage, unequal playing conditions, and a significant pay gap when compared to their male counterparts. To tackle some of these challenges head-on, FIFA has taken a significant step by raising the prize money for the 2023 Women's World Cup to an impressive $150 million, tripling the amount awarded in 2019. Additionally, UN Women and FIFA have devised two powerful calls-to-action: Unite for Gender Equality and Unite for Ending Violence against Women, which will be actively promoted during matches and across social media platforms. UN Women and FIFA are coming together during the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand 2023 (20 July to 20 August 2023) to celebrate the skills and achievements of the teams and players, to advance gender equality in football, and to prevent abuse and discrimination on and off the field. The 2023 tournament is expected to be seen by more than two billion people—the largest audience in history for a single women’s sport—which offers an opportunity to celebrate women’s achievement in sport and to move the needle, both for women’s football and for gender equality. Globally, women players continue to struggle with fewer professional opportunities, a massive pay gap, fewer sponsorships, less airtime, and unequal playing conditions. When women players do succeed, they regularly face a toxic backlash of abuse online and offline. To address some of these challenges and advance in closing the gender gap in football, FIFA raised the prize money for the 2023 Women’s World Cup to USD 150 million—triple the amount in 2019—as part of a three-step gender equality plan. On top of my daily work as a change management consultant, I play football but also try to get involved and support women in the sport. Inspired by my thesis, I have now got my first peer-reviewed article published in the 2023 yearbook of the Finnish Society for Sport History titled: "Gender inequality in Finnish Football - The perspective of top-level female players". While writing my thesis, I got to talk to 11 inspiring top-level female football players, that openly shared their experiences being discriminated against their gender and struggles with the gender norms as professional players in the top league in Finland. Looking at the record breaking World Cup this summer, I strongly believe that there is a huge untapped potential in the football played by women that will simultaneously drive the agenda of gender equality also wider in society. As one of the players put it: "If we would talk about women's football similarly to men's football in the news, and that women's football would also be shown on TV as much as men's football, different leagues and everything. That would increase the awareness and bring the [gender equality] topic further. And get more juniors excited about it, and more girls pursue playing and start to view it as a potential career. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿💥Come on England!!💥 What an achievement to reach the final of a World Cup!! From the Lionesses' historic bronze medal win at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup to the incredible success of the FA Women's Super League, and now a World Cup Final it's obvious that women's football is going from strength to strength in England. Growing up as someone who has always loved football I never thought I would see the day! As the world continues to strive for gender equality, the legal industry is no different. 🤝 According to a report by the Law Society of England and Wales, women now make up almost half of all qualified solicitors. This is a notable improvement in the past decade, with women representing just 28% of the profession in 2010. 💪 Equal representation in the legal industry is important as it allows for broader perspectives and better representation of client interests. Women are increasingly taking on leadership roles in the legal industry. Despite these encouraging figures, there is still an imbalance in the senior roles of the legal sector. In 2019, only 18% of partners at the top 200 law firms in the UK were female. 🤷♀️ Year after year though it is heading in the right direction! Like with women's football, it's encouraging to see more women entering the legal industry and achieving positions of leadership, but there is still progress to be made. 💪 Come on the girls 🙌🙌🙌 Best of luck to England on Sunday ... *Fast-tracking gender equality in football* We should congratulate both Emma Hayes and the U.S. Soccer Federation on her appointment. The latter because her reported annual salary will (rightly) match that of her male counterpart. As the chart, from The Athletic, shows, all other national federations are miles off where they should be. National Federations are a great place for advancing equality because they have both a men's and women's team, side by side. Male/female comparisons are clear, and so too are the liberating benefits on men of female advancement. I've often said it, but this is why, at club level, Lewes Football Club is such an important and unique 'laboratory' and accelerator for gender equality - it has been demonstrating for years how backing its women's team is also directly benefiting its men's team, be that more sponsorship, more fan-owners and even a new grant-enabled pitch. Since it is (some!) men who are the barriers to equality, be that in clubs, federations or even potential sponsors, showing them how men benefit too is vital in hastening the day that equality is achieved. #EqualityFC
