Dear VC friends, in 2 weeks from now, Invest Europe’s annual Venture Capital Forum will bring together its European members to share insights and debate the key topics shaping the future of VC investment. Once again, it is a great pleasure for me to chair this event, and for Bryan, Garnier & Co to continue supporting the ecosystem as a key sponsor of the VCF.   The Venture Capital Forum is a unique opportunity to build longstanding relationships with other GPs throughout Europe and beyond. I first attended an Invest Europe forum back in 1994 – as a young VC investment professional, and some of the friendships made then remain today.     This Forum is also a unique opportunity for the venture and growth capital members to gather, share their experiences and gain perspective on the market outlook and ecosystem. The radically changing context from one edition to another always give us the opportunity to share valuable insights : It was the concerns raised by COVID-19 in the 2019 edition, which was followed by the exhilarating 2020 and 2021 editions which confirmed the VC asset class as the outperformer of the PE industry. The 2022 edition was held while we were witnessing a new war in Europe which triggered the closing of the IPO markets. Since the last edition, the SVB bankruptcy and its collateral dammages put the entire venture ecosystem under significant pressure. The economic crisis and rising inflation rates have steepened the drop in valuations, and have brought liquidity challenges to both portfolio companies and funds under-management. All this in the context of an acceleration of environmental disasters resulting from a rapidly changing climate.... If this is our environment for this new 2023 VCF edition, the recent re-opening of the IPO market with ARM, Instacart, and Klaviyo, may nevertheless give us a glimmer of hope for a more positive outlook.   If you are not already registered, I encourage you to do so. Mind blown. This is impressive and expansive watching. I would love to know what my LI friends think of this. Watch, take notes 📝 and tell me your take outs - we can compare notes! 1. A model for thinking about the high level phases we must move through and some of the conceptual barriers we must break through to get to net generative, positive impact to nature 2. A nice simple economic reasoning to propel the effectiveness of disruption (productivity leverage) - using the energy of capitalism to move past it 3. A ‘tech bro’ describing the challenge of shifting a western worldview of valuing things as nouns (inputs - entirely currently created from mined or grown compounds) to verbs (ecological systems that generate everything we need) - and giving a great example of how indigenous worldviews inherently operate in the ‘verb’ modality - and the wisdom and opportunity ahead if we only honoured indigenous traditions and practices. Absolute stonker this interview - get comfy and dive in, you won’t regret it…
