The 10 Barrel Brewing Co. Trail Crew; in partnership with the US Forest Service, took the morning volunteering to help beautify the outdoors we all love by helping build trails, clean up fire rings, and install signage at Devils and Todd Lake. McDonald’s has introduced a tiny restaurant designed specifically for bees, aiming to provide a safe haven for these important creatures. This fully functional beehive was carefully created by a skilled woodworker and offers enough room to accommodate thousands of bees. The miniature eatery features recognizable McDonald’s branding, including a small “drive-thru” entrance and a cozy patio area with seating. It even includes window advertisements, resembling a traditional McDonald’s restaurant. This unique initiative was inspired by McDonald’s branches in Sweden, which have beehives installed on their rooftops. Moreover, various McDonald’s franchisees have joined in efforts to protect bees, as their population has been declining significantly in recent years. By creating the world’s tiniest restaurant for bees, McDonald’s aims to raise awareness about the importance of these pollinators and the challenges they face. This initiative not only pays tribute to their Swedish branches but also encourages other businesses and individuals to take action in protecting and supporting bee populations. #bees #McDonald #Sweden #businesses #challenges

It was great to be a part, albeit a very minor, of this collaboration brew between Murphy & Son Ltd, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust and Castle Rock Brewery. The aim was to produce a more sustainable beer, this was achieved by: 1 - The addition of 'Trizyme', a Murphy's product that is an enzyme blend of a-amylase, b-glucanase and protease to improve saccharification of the malt and to aid yeast metabolism. 2 - Using a 'Kviek' yeast that can ferment rapidly at temperature above 30C, thereby reducing fermentation time and the requirement for significant cooling. 3 - Using British grown hop varieties. The use of local hops reduces the CO2 impact of transportation when compared to the varities originating from the US or NZ. I'm hoping to pursue more avenues to improve the environmental impact of the brewing indistry with Murphy's and our collaborators!
We had an amazing time launching our latest beer, Ripples, with a quiz night, raffle and auction in the Old Cold Store last week! 🍺 Brewed with Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust and Murphy & Son Ltd Ltd, all proceeds from the event plus 50p from every pint goes towards the Trust's Wetlands for Wildlife in Nottinghamshire appeal. 💧 💙 Thank you to everyone that came along, helping us raise over £900 for Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust ✨ Check out our videos about the appeal and the beer here: https://lnkd.in/ek5UscYZ

Last Tuesday, Joe Pélissier was running an off-site workshop for WildFish exploring ways to maximise the impact of the messages it wants to communicate in 2024. When you are a small busy team, and with more projects than resources, this is always a challenge. WildFish is an amazing environmental NGO doing great work to increase our awareness and understanding of the state of our polluted rivers. Their work is evidence based which is why the government and its #environmental agencies have little choice but to start to listen to them. https://wildfish.org/ These workshops are always fun and challenging, and I learn a lot from delivering them. If you are a small team looking to review how you are going to get your message out this year, here are a few of my takeaways: 1. Always try to make the time review and evaluate they way you communicate and the frequency - don't keep doing the same old thing. 2. Too often we are fixated on frequency at the expense of being relevant and interesting. 3. People find it very hard to work out and agree on what they should STOP doing. 4. Younger colleagues have a more finely attuned sense of what does and doesn't work digitally - they need to be brought into the conversation much, much earlier. 5. Bring in some friendly outsiders to watch and observe the workshop - they will have powerful insights worth paying attention to. A big thank you to CEO, Nick Measham, Deputy CEO, Janina Gray and Communications Manager, Immy O'Keeffe for asking me to run the workshop. Here's to the continued success of the important work that WildFish does. Please pay them a visit. https://wildfish.org/

We have a story in the latest issue of Neighbourhood Media detailing all the work we do via Addison Road Food Pantry Camperdown, our low-cost grocery store which makes use of rescued, donated and purchased food to support the local community and its needs. The story (link below) shows how we help feed people from Mission Australia's Common Ground housing project and the nearby Johanna O’Dea Court, a multi-storey NSW Family and Community Services apartment block. It also explains how we serve people living on a tight budget in Camperdown and Glebe, as well as people who come to the pantry from right across the City of Sydney LGA. Most of all, the story is a celebration of our monthly Addi Road 'Let's Get Cooking' sessions (AKA "the Cook-Up"), which offers 260 free hot meals for Mission Australia and Joanna O'Dea residents, as well as those shopping at our Addi Road Food Pantry Camperdown. These sessions involve a monthly cooking demo inside the Common Ground building. Food literacy is the ultimate goal behind Addi Road's Let's Get Cooking program. As well as simply providing a free hot meal (and dessert) each month, we look at helping people to shop AND cook with often very limited funds. Each month there are easy recipes on offer (and ready to be tasted) along extra tips for stocking people's kitchen cupboards; a list of essentials to facilitate simple, inexpensive and nutritious recipes that will match whatever Addi Road Food Pantry might have in stock. It's about building an integrated food ecology for people battling. With a few extra special ingredients over a shared meal as the community comes together: camaraderie and connection. + #Addiroad #cityofsydney #foodrelief #foodjustice #housing #inequality #Camperdown #Glebe #MissionAustralia #homeless #battling #costofliving #poverty #resilience #mentalhealth #wellbeing #nutrition #diet #charity #community #freemeals #cookingworkshop #volunteers #caring #education #connection #letsgetcooking #neighbourhoodmedia https://lnkd.in/gs7vVEvM

We had an incredible time celebrating the achievements of our amazing scholars at the Starfish Senior Celebration! A special shoutout to our two Starfish Scholars, who are recipients of the Mike Feeney Scholarship. Thanks to our donors' generosity, we could offer this scholarship for the first time ever. It was truly inspiring to hear from former mentors and scholars, sharing their journey with Starfish Initiative—a perfect example of the impact of our mission and the strength of our community. #StarfishInitiative #YouthEmpowerment

We've been out volunteering as part of the Benefact Group Big Give Back week!😁 Mandy & Sonya have visited the beautiful Heal Somerset, and were treated to a tour of the Heal rewilding site, from CEO Jan Stannard; totally immersed in nature from insects, to birds, to plants and trees and other animals🌱 Our team also took part in worm surveys, which provided a big insight in to the quality of the soil and the habitats of the different kinds of worms. Thank you to Heal Rewilding for welcoming us on site, our team has described their experience as 'truly magical'💜 #BigGiveBack2024

Our true purpose in life? Giving back to nature! We are natural born consumers and we need a lot of care and attention. Therefore if we can do it, giving back is an empowering and eye opening experience. Our personal mission, goal and purpose in life is different from one person to another, we're all here to fulfil a different purpose. But there is a common purpose that is shared between all of us and that is giving back to nature, looking after the environment, animals and one another. In this way we are giving back to nature. This is a common duty and it requires systems and processes in place, but recycling for example is a good example of looking after the environment, giving to animal protection is a good charity and doing jobs that support others is a good way to give back to others. So this adds value to who we are and gives us a mature vision in life. Giving back is our common purpose.
