Happy birthday to my father RC who turned 60 today. I could not wish for a better father. My father has been my mentor, my best friend, my partner, and so much more. From grinding it out tennis tournament after tournament in the USTA days to building a real estate empire with Hollywood Estates and Thornton Development Group, to all of the countless laughs and good times that we have had, we really have lived a full life to this moment. However, what I admire most about my father is that he is truly selfless and relentless when it comes to ensuring that his family succeeds. I am one of three siblings on the autism spectrum that my father has raised. True story, when my brother and I were diagnosed with autism as babies in the 1990’s, a doctor told my mom and my dad that my other brother who was more severely on the spectrum than I was that he would never talk or live a normal life. 🤯 Being the warrior that my dad is, he told that doctor to f#*k off and that he wouldn’t take that as an answer. Similar to Napoleon Hill in “Think and Grow Rich”, he manifested and did everything in his power to ensure that his autistic son(s) would succeed. Many years later, we are light years in progress in our careers, socialization, and lives than that doctors bogus prognosis. Dad, you will always be my #1 mentor (alongside my mom and wife of course!) and I love you to the moon and beyond. I’m on the #autism spectrum but I am also ranked in the top 1% in CA and the US for sold residential properties in 2023 (personally sold nearly $42,000,000 and sold nearly $70,000,000 through our small but mighty team at Hollywood Estates). I also have nearly $50,000,000 in active listings on the market. 🏡🏆📈 How is this possible?! 🤯 If you asked most people if an adult on the autism spectrum can be one of the top salespersons, let alone a top real estate agent, most people would say that it is not possible due to various characteristics such as lack of eye contact, preference for introvertive tasks, lack of social and communication queues, amongst other reasons. However, I am living proof that an individual on the autism spectrum can excel in sales and notoriously extrovertive tasks and positions! 💪🙌 Funny thing is that I wouldn’t even say that I’m truly an extrovert but only when I need or want to be! The point being, not all individuals with autism are behind the computer / desk geeks or introverts.. many adults with autism have the capabilities and preference of being extroverts and can bring a unique perspective to the table for sales and extrovertive roles and responsibilities that is different than their neurotypical peers!

After doing a deep dive on Autism in relation to homelessness, I was floored by the estimated percentages of adults with autism and I/DD who have been experiencing homelessness. In most cases where adults with autism do not have supportive parents or caregivers or that there parental and caregiver support has passed away or disappeared, the risk of homelessness and worse skyrockets exorbitantly. I am curious to see where my connections believe that the estimated autistic homeless percentage lies. As someone on the autism spectrum, I have always been fascinated with exciting projects that have a tremendous impact in the autism community. As of recently, I have been extremely interested in the idea of creating apartment housing for adults on the autism spectrum and their families. A few exciting and promising ventures that I have seen facilitating development and operation of autism housing are the following First Place AZ: https://firstplaceaz.org/ The Village at Cornerstone: https://lnkd.in/gcF9CB98 When you see some of the statistics pertaining to adults with autism and their need and desire for affordable housing solutions, your jaw will drop. -Per The Arc, 62% of individuals with autism and I/DD dream of living in their own home or apartment -Per the "A Place In The World" white paper, 1.3 million individuals with autism & I/DD lived with a caregiver over 60 years old. -Per the "A Place In The World" white paper, the number of adults with autism and I/DD will nearly double to well over 1 million people by 2030. -Per the "A Place In The World" white paper, in 2016 there were approximately 5.5 million adults with autism and 7.37 million adults with I/DD in the US. This is only diagnosed individuals with autism, there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of undiagnosed adults with autism that live in the United States due to the lack of broader diagnostic criteria prior to 2000. -Roughly 85% of all adults on the autism spectrum are either unemployed or underemployed despite their intellectual capabilities, skill sets, or educational backgrounds. One of my biggest fears for the autism community is what happens to adults with autism when their parents and/or their caregivers pass away. Does that result in eventual homelessness? Jail? Even worse? Stating this, through The ASD Company, I am starting to make a transition into work focused on creating housing solutions for adults with autism. I want to create robust autism communities within apartment complexes that empower individuals with autism to live their best lives by being able to interact with other like-kind individuals, all while having top class educational and job skills training and resources so that they can transition to meaningful and lucrative employment that allows them to be self-independent.
