An interesting interview for any aspiring leader in the industry.

I just finished "The New Gold Standard" by Joseph Michelli, Ph.D. and it's a worthwhile journey into The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. by Marriott International guest service ethos. What stands out is the grounded approach — real stories and practical tips. Michelli unveils the inner workings of The Ritz-Carlton, offering a blueprint for organizations looking to elevate their guest experience. The anecdotes humanize the strategies, making it relatable and applicable. I recommend this book to anyone in the hospitality industry or those keen on refining their service skills. It's not just about luxury; it's about the fundamentals that create a memorable guest journey. Whether you're a business leader, manager, or simply interested in excellent service, "The New Gold Standard" deserves a spot on your reading list.

Unlike anyone else in our Group, I took some time before deciding to post and share this award. We all should be proud of this achievement after years and months of struggles to restore the level of recognition and market leadership, for our property. However, aside from the glitzy glorified image of a hotel or resort, it lies more than that: the people working behind the scenes, with their own struggles and challenges. Their dreams and goals (if they have) and how I should be able to direct them towards the right path of understanding that there is more in life. The change in mindsets from average people working in hotels to become superstar hoteliers. The trainings we offer them to develop their career and the hunger we instill in them, to be eager at becoming better professionals, capable to succeed one day and stand on their feet alone. The system we put in place to ensure smooth, streamlined, efficient operations. The service culture and orientation we want to deliver to each single guest, regardless they are VIPs, celebrities, or just people like me and you. The genuine care to exceed guests' expectations, just paid off by a guest's single smile or by hearing their kids saying "Mummy, this is the best hotel ever"! And not to forget what I always call the "corporate culture" we want all staff to be aligned. Not merely a list of values or mission statement, forced to be memorized; but instead, how do you live them everyday, in your personal and professional life? The day all the above will be reached, an invisible Best Award will be given to me, much more worth it than any other recognition.

Only a handful of specialized books cater to the #hospitality industry. Recently, I came across "Check in and Never Check Out" authored by Rattan Keswani Here are key takeaways: - Passion is vital for hospitality success; without it, genuine achievements are elusive. - Exceptional customer service is the cornerstone of thriving hotels. MAINTAIN YOUR FOCUS AND PASSION ..... remember, perspective is entirely dependent on your starting point. Consider my journey, for instance. I began as a Key Filer at the #TorontoSheratonCentre, a hotel with 1407 rooms, where my task was simply to organize the bedroom keys behind the front desk. Fast forward 40 years, and I've opened 5 hotels, renovated and rebranded 3 others, and lived in 7 countries across 4 continents. And now, I have the honour of leading the amazing #DorianHotel team, an incredible group of passionate hospitality professionals. Has every day been wonderful? Certainly not, we all experience highs and lows. However, it's important to keep things in perspective. Take moments to reflect on your completed projects, earned certificates and positions, and the lives you've touched. It's only when you look back that you fully appreciate how far you've come. This retrospection not only reveals the magnitude of your growth but also fuels your drive to continue and to motivate others. The second episode of Ferrières Insight, our online streaming show just dropped on YouTube. I had two great guests, Gerald Lampaert , Founder & CEO of VERTU HOTELS AND RESORTS; ‘If others can create hotel groups, why not me?’, he stated, following his dream. Angelo Vassallo , Hotel Manager at Minor Hotels, who converted a storage room in a profitable hotel restaurant, was my second guest. Regarding good leadership, Mr. Lampaert talked about the importance of ‘giving your people trust, tools and making them dream about what is possible. Almost everything is possible if you want, have creativity and the right team’. Mr. Vassallo concurred and mentioned how leaders have to create new leaders; ‘I was proud of helping one of my trainees to become the best bartender of Germany’. Mr. Lampaert discussed how ‘technology has become front and center in the hotel experience, especially for the younger generations, ranging from mobile check-in to digital menu and dynamic pricing’. According to Mr. Vassallo, ‘a (hotel) restaurant is not to feed hotel guests but to provide an authentic experience that attracts both hotel guests and locals’. Lastly, according to Mr. Lampaert, ‘the hospitality industry is fascinating and beautiful as it allows you to grow internally and internationally, as you change hotels, brands and countries’. Mr. Vassallo agreed; ‘Unlike other industries, you immediately see the result of your work, if the guest was happy or not. You grow in empathy and people skills.
