Picture the colossal amount of wealth that is $31.3 billion US dollars. That is the total amount of international humanitarian aid allocated in 2021. Of that staggering sum, only 1.2% is sent to local NGOs in the form of direct aid. The rest moves through a chain of subcontractors, global funds, and multilateral institutions that spend large sums on operational costs. Millions of dollars that are supposed to secure food or medical supplies for those in need end up earmarked for items like pristine white Toyota Land Cruisers, business-class trips to Geneva, or costly office spaces in the nearest stable city center. Millions more are lost to corruption, waste, and mismanagement. This imbalance exposes a harsh reality: resources meant to serve as a lifeline for those in pain are often whittled away by the same structures created to help them. https://lnkd.in/etyCRh3h

Humanitarian Practitioner | Budget planning and management | Monitoring and Evaluation | Project Coordination |
Apart from doing great job of serving #humanities and those #marginalized #communities, #Humanitarian organizations often face several critical #problems, including; • Resource Limitations; Funding shortages hinders their ability to provide aid effectively. • Access Constraints; Political conflicts, bureaucratic hurdles, and security risks limits access to affected populations which tends to discourage the service provisions and meet the needs of marginalized communities • Coordination Challenges; The lack of coordination among various organizations leads to duplication of efforts and inefficiencies • Data Management; Inadequate data collection, analysis, and sharing also hinders decision-making and resource allocation • Sustainability; Short-term aid may not address underlying issues, requiring a focus on long-term solutions and capacity-building. In order to address these challenges, humanitarian organizations can; 1. Diversify Funding Sources: Seek funding from multiple donors, explore innovative financing mechanisms, and invest in fundraising efforts. 2. Negotiate Access: Engage in diplomatic efforts, build partnerships with local stakeholders, and advocate for safe access to affected areas. 3. Enhance Coordination: Establish communication channels, share information and resources, and participate in joint needs assessments and planning. 4. Utilize Technology: Implement digital tools for data collection, analysis, and visualization, and leverage technologies like blockchain for transparent and efficient resource tracking. 5. Empower Local Communities: Humanitarian organizations need to prioritize community participation and ownership, invest in local capacity-building, and integrate sustainability principles into aid programs. By addressing these issues #proactively and #collaboratively, #humanitarian organizations can improve their #effectiveness and #impact in delivering assistance to those in #need.

What Role Does Policy Play in Moving Africa's Tech Landscape Towards Global Competitiveness? A pivotal avenue for Africa's ascent to prominence in the global technology sphere lies in the realm of policy development. Across the continent, policymakers hold the reins to drive strategic interventions, narrowing the chasm that impedes Africa's seamless integration into global systems and propelling it towards a position of competitiveness. Take a breather to imagine a continent where thoroughly crafted inclusive, robust and responsive regulations empower both nascent startups and established tech giants to innovate with audacity. Envision a landscape where localised solutions are engineered to uplift marginalised communities and bolster the informal sector, turning unique challenges into fertile ground for revolutionary advancements. This is the trajectory we must chart as a collective. During the dynamic "International Technology Panel" I had the privilege to moderate at the recent 3i Africa Summit, a pivotal inquiry directed to Matt Grasser, Co-Founder and Co-Head of Cambridge SupTech Lab, was: "How can Africa's policymakers and regulators collaborate to harmonise and streamline regulations, for a unified digital marketplace?"
