The hand of the maker. 🖐 Do you make things? Growing up in a family of makers, we were taught how use tools, solve design problems, and create everything from food to fine arts. A hand built ANYTHING was better than shop bought, and I still make presents by hand today, be it a cake, a cushion, or a suit of clothes. Unique is good in the world of arts and crafts. And I like people who make things. There is very little of interest about people who are simply consumers of goods. I thought that in my childhood, and I still do; interesting people do interesting things. One of my favourite interesting people is opening a new outlet for his skills today. If you are a fan of Suzie Fletcher on The Repair Shop, just change the image a little bit. Twiddle with the vertical and horizontal hold (IYKYK) – and there you have him – Harry W.. Harry tells me that the only thing wrong with the presentation of his craft on The Repair Shop is the lack of timekeeping. The hours that go into leather working seem to vanish on the cutting room floor. Hand made is skilful and slow, and that costs. The upside is that the product can literally last a lifetime with the right care and repairs made in a timely manner. It staggers me that women will spend hundreds on a handbag, but fail to feed and care for them until it's time to flog them off online. Harry can teach you to look after your leather, and repair when you need it. A stitch in time saves nine. Skin needs food. He can probably help you with that too. He also makes unique, bespoke gifts and immensely practical luggage and bags. Yes, we all think of him as a bloke in a suit working in the City in finance and advising on financial compliance all over the world. But add to that a skilled designer of luggage for a large manufacturing company, and a skilled artisan in leather and saddlery, and you need a slightly different frame. 🖼 I won't be the only person making the journey to Norfolk in the coming weeks. Tip of the Week This week’s tip is about patterns. Knit and crochet patterns are available in lots of places. Online is my go-to place. Free patterns are abundant. Deciphering a pattern, however, can be a whole different ballgame. Most folks who write and share their patterns mean well and want users to enjoy the experience. Some instructions are very straightforward and easy to read. Others can be a nightmare. It’s always best to review a pattern in its entirety before starting a project and check your work as you move along. Even though I’ve been knitting and crocheting for decades, I sometimes forget my own advice, which costs me precious time. The bottom line is that we all are always students of our craft. At one of my events, I met Kristine. She had purchased several same-style hats in San Francisco years ago and only had one left. She asked if I could duplicate the hat. When she came over to pick up her special order, she brought the hat. I sat down with a huge piece of parchment paper and a pencil and wrote the pattern shown in the photo. She loved it, and I have made a total of 12 hats for her. I’m going to show you in three steps how a group of coworkers created one collective piece of art. 🖼️ Creative collaboration brings people together and resets the stress meter at work.🧘🏽♀️ STEP ONE: I got a two-foot embroidery hoop and some faux silk at Joann's fabric store. I also bought a liquid resin resist so I could make this mandala by squeezing the resist out of the bottle onto the faux silk. Notice how imperfect and irregular it is. Precision doesn’t matter since we simply want to make a design that has lots of shapes to it. Actually, I traced most of this by laying the hoop on a rug that had a pattern. You could also trace an image from a poster, or copy a mandala image you find online. Check back for Step Two later this week. Big news, CLO has added 3D Knit Design! Check out the link to the full tutorial below. What it does: Allows you to design realistic, geometry based knit and yarn structures. What it doesn't do (yet): Output a knit bitmap or knitting instructions. It also does not appear to include yarn+knit structure physics. I'm totally ok with the limitations, because it allows designers to start taking the first steps to 3D knit design. (Perfection is the enemy of good). CLO can now add these features over time. This is not my first embroidery pattern design, but it is the first one I've offered for sale. Although the example has been worked in a hoop, and designed for display - this product is a digital download (19 pages of detailed instructions with illustrations, so that even a beginner can get great results) - so you can use the design where you like - on a bag, a shirt, the back of a jacket...
