According to an industry report by the Manufacturing Institute, by 2028, the U.S. alone could face a shortage of over 2.4 million skilled manufacturing workers. Several factors contribute to the widening gap between the skills required by modern manufacturing and the qualifications possessed by the workforce, including the retirement of experienced workers, lack of emphasis on vocational training in traditional educational curricula, misconceptions about manufacturing careers and the rapid evolution of technology, which renders existing skills obsolete. New machinery orders were up nearly 22% from April 2024 and up 6.5% over May 2023. This is the first month in 2024 where the value of orders placed exceeded those of the same month the previous year.
