"In a life of busyness and ambushes on our attention, dog walks air out the brain. Sometimes they might seem like an inconvenience, but only in the way G. K. Chesterton defined 'inconvenience'—an adventure wrongly considered. Considered correctly, the daily dog walks are a regimen of escape and pause. They enlarge our sympathies and sweeten our disposition. They pry open the day when it balls up into a little fist," John Dickerson writes. (From 2021)

Our family came late to completing itself with a dog. It was never the right time, we were always on the move. When covid came and we were forced to slow down we found Chilli, an apricot poodle, who has become the anchor, teacher and key to our wellbeing. His walks have been the greatest source of connection in our neighbourhood, the best opportunity to improve my German (English speaker living in Germany) and the opportunity to breathe, listen to the birds and notice the way the woods and streams around our home chance from one day to the next.

However simple a creature a dog is, they serve as great reminders for what is important. Their happiness to go for a walk is infectious, or at least should be if we can get out of our own heads. I suppose the lesson here is that every person deserves love and compassion. Perhaps in the end we all get to go heaven too.

Couldn’t agree more. Great time to pray.
