Yesterday, Marcus (President of The Advocates) interviewed a candidate applying for an internal position at our firm, and the candidate followed up immediately with a thank you email and a very thoughtful question. He asked: The values listed on your website really resonate with me. Do any of them speak to you more than others? Marcus’ answer was something like: Choosing my favorite value from our nine values is difficult. It’s sort of like asking me to pick my favorite child!! I heard something the other day about listening -- that true, active listening is an act of love. Now that sounds corny in a business context, but if you look at our values: Diversity & Belonging, Care, Advocacy, Teamwork, Integrity, Understanding, Community, Fun, and Urgency, in total, they paint a picture of true caring about each other, our community, our clients and our candidates. To some extent, all of our values require trying to meet people where they are and truly listening to and hearing them. That is at the core of what we try to do. Of course, I run a business, and businesses exist to earn money and create value. But, running our business that way leads to success and positive outcomes including money.
