“What goes into a can of fish? What are they made of, and how are they built?”
Dr Poonperm Vardhanabindu, our Sustainability Product Manager at BV Thailand, challenged audiences to think about the intricacies of our supply chain beyond immediate on-site impact – where are our products from and how were they built?
Speaking at the "Sustainability for Business Forum” last month, he shed light on the importance of seeing supply chains through a life cycle perspective.
“The can’s tin might be mined from Africa, while the paper label of the can might be from Borneo.”
By thinking of the wider origins and tracing where a simple product such as a can of fish is made, we can better quantify the true environmental impacts and resource consumption in the value chain. Through the willingness of stepping back and having a wider gaze, the path to sustainable management and monitoring begins.
The forum was a collaboration between international chambers of commerce - the Netherlands-Thai Chamber of Commerce (NTCC), Franco-Thai Chamber of Commerce (FTCC), Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce (SweCham), Thai-Swiss Chamber of Commerce (STCC), and Singapore Thai Chamber of Commerce (STCC). We are humbled to share our knowledge on #sustainability and help businesses embark on their sustainability journey.

It is undeniable that we are facing pressing concerns regarding global resource depletion and its potential impact on future generations. This sheds light on the alarming projection of a substantial rise in natural resource consumption by 2060, which poses risks to climate, biodiversity, and pollution control objectives.
In response to these challenges, the Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) framework has emerged as a crucial tool for businesses to embrace responsible practices. ESG advocates for ethical investments, sustainable sourcing, and operational excellence, thereby fostering sustainable trade. The article highlights notable companies that have successfully integrated ESG principles into their operations.
In Malaysia, government agencies such as MITI and MATRADE are spearheading ESG adoption through initiatives like KenalESG and the iESG Framework. These endeavors seek to embed sustainability into policies and practices pertaining to international trade.
Furthermore, MATRADE's Government Sustainability Engagement Programme (GSEP) and Greening of Export Supply Chain (GxSCI) play pivotal roles in fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors to promote sustainable trade. The article underscores the significance of ESG in driving economic prosperity while safeguarding environmental and social well-being. It emphasises the urgency for collective action to secure a sustainable future for generations to come.
Special thanks to Edison Choong led by Abu Bakar Yusof, representing MATRADE's sustainability team, for providing the essence of this article.

Agree with you John O'Keeffe that partnerships are crucial to make accelerated change and impact for sustainability.
Partnerships are hard and I loved sharing ideas and views on how to build effective collaborations at Diageo’s APAC Sustainability Academy. My key learnings through my experience of coaching teams to work better together:
🌱 Define the common purpose of the Partnership. What can you only achieve together rather than apart? Focus here.
🥅 Define clear goals and milestones. Celebrate milestones.
🤝 Co-create culture, values and working agreements for the new Partnership. Agree on when you need to collaborate and when you don’t, how you will make decisions, skillfully have conflict and keep communication open and transparent. This keeps a conscious focus on the relationships and builds trust.
👥 Establish clear roles and responsibilities. Be realistic and transparent of the power dynamics of all partners.

President & CEO Diageo Asia Pacific, Global Travel and India
Partnerships are crucial for us to make change and impact for sustainability. At Diageo, we're fortunate to work together with fantastic partners to propel our global Spirit of Progress ESG action plan. Earlier this week, we kicked off our third annual internal APAC Sustainability Academy (ASA) with an engaging Outside/In Conversation on how we can progress even stronger partnerships and collaborations to make greater impact.
Thank you to Dr Julian Waters-Lynch and Ramya Eva, CPCC, ACC for joining the panel to share experiences and insights from your respective research and workshops. ASA is also a chance for us to spotlight some of the ongoing work around Diageo so it was great to have Claudine Xie from Diageo Taiwan share about our long-standing Keep Walking Fund program and Richard Bernhard from Kenan Foundation Asia talk about their areas of focus and the Learning for Life community programs they're running with us in Thailand and Vietnam.
We covered lots of ground and there were many points that sparked lively discussion. But one which struck me and that we all agreed on was the importance of trust and the relationships we have with one another that form the foundation for partnerships.
Does that resonate and what has stood out in the most effective collaborations you've been part of?

We had our first ever event catered to the #palmoil sector to discuss about how companies in the sector can take #climateaction today, co-hosted with our friends from UOB.
The highlight for me was the illuminating and candid forum discussion that I was fortunate to have moderated. Our esteemed panelists Olivier Tichit, M Windrawan Inantha and Lyra Pinto spoke candidly on issues including challenges faced by palm companies to align sustainability and performance targets, the business case to undertake #climateaction today has a marginal impact of the finished product & the need to deconflate short-term and long-term priorities for the business.
Key takeaways from the discussion for me was the need for the inclusion of an environmental KPI I.e. carbon emissions, in addition to Yields and Production volume. Olivier Tichit shared that this was critical to align objectives across all levels in the organization. M Windrawan Inantha alluded to the need for palm companies to engage their value chains including peers in order to drive #climateaction at scale and at speed. Lyra Pinto concluded the need to take #climateactionnow and not let perfection be the enemy of good.
A heartfelt appreciation to our friends from UOB in Singapore & Indonesia for being an amazing collaborator, and colleagues from South Pole Indonesia to help make this event a resounding success!

The future of sustainability in the Palm Oil sector will be Asian-led.
In an opinion piece published on Eco-Business, IDH Regional Director of Asian landscapes, Chi Tran, shares that while the first phase of palm oil sustainability may have been shaped by European markets, the future of sustainability in the palm oil industry will be Asian-led. Chi highlights four ways to achieve this:
✅ Investing in traceability;
✅ Building on existing NDPE commitments;
✅ Landscape leadership on palm oil sustainability;
✅ Replanting
With 19 companies and over 100,000 farmers in Indonesia and Malaysia, IDH and partners are working on these initiatives to promote sustainability in the palm oil sector.
The article explores the future of sustainability in Asian palm oil:
1) The sector will be Asia-led and come about in collaboration between smallholders, regional buyers, and producer governments.
2) It will place a greater emphasis on the needs of smallholders, increasing yields within farm boundaries, and offering dignified livelihoods.

#foodpandaPhilippines knows the importance of creating opportunities that enrich the lives of Filipinos. 🌱 By promoting sustainable practices, we're able to make a difference in impactful ways. Here's what our 2023 #pandapurpose report says! 👇🏻
In #Thailand, the focus is now on #sustainability. Business leaders in the private sector and the government play a key role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals have been well-received by local businesses.
Thailand actually is one of the leading countries in Southeast Asia for sustainability reporting and managing #ESG risks.
While sustainability reports are a good start, we aren't enough to unlock the full potential of businesses to make a positive social impact. To truly be a sustainable business, companies need to fully integrate sustainability into their strategies, operations, stakeholder engagement, and supply chain management. This includes properly measuring and managing their impact.
Fortunately, many Thai businesses recognise the ongoing crises of climate change and social issues. Over my 3 years in this industry, I've seen Thai companies become more active in addressing development challenges through #CSR activities. The number of Thai companies participating in #EcoVadis Solutions has also significantly increased. These companies are on a mission and understand the importance of caring for the planet and society, beyond just compliance or transparency or their trading partners ask them to do so. That’s my mission too.
Change takes time and won't happen overnight. It's time for action, not just words. Go Green Thailand!
