IX Event wrap-up thoughts #2: Real-Time Release Got lucky getting to moderate this panel. I used to do a lot of work on this topic when I used to work with Mettler-Toledo International, Inc, though mostly from the sensing side of things, so it was interesting to get a different perspective on this. Our own James Wells, along with Jason McGuire from Fagron and Mike Tomasco from Pfizer had a great discussion with the other attendees about how they have implemented new tools that allow them to get closer to the Holy Grail of pharma production: Real-Time Release. Couple of nuggets of gold from the roundtable: 1. Inefficiency is currently the biggest challenge that many producers face. Think about the amount of time in a pharma process that is wasted by mundane tasks. Tackling this issue is top of mind for many out there, but how to address it has many answers. 2. Old tools are still being used everywhere. Anyone that has worked with pharma for a while has seen the tendency for sticking with what works. However, the potential gains are such that many are moving on and looking at implementing the next generation of tools that will help to address inefficiency. 3. One great example of this was a current GenAI application that is being tried. This new tool, coupled with the new processes that are being implemented (remember tech and processes both need to be improved) could see investigation times reduced by 80%. 🔬 Unlocking Innovation: The Role of Quality Control Labs in Pharma The pharmaceutical industry is undergoing a transformative shift, recognising the immense value of data across the entire product lifecycle. From drug discovery to patient care, the #DigitalThread weaves a continuous loop of optimization. At the heart of this process lies the Quality Control (QC) lab, playing a pivotal role in timely product release and maintaining the digital thread’s integrity. Recently, I had the privilege of engaging with the BioPharmaChem Ireland and ISPE Ireland Affiliate workshop for Lab 5.0. Our focus? To explore how innovations from other parts of the pharma value stream could be harnessed within QC labs to align with the goals of Industry 5.0. Here are some key innovations we discussed: 💡 ✔️ Simulation and Digital Twins: These technologies accelerate activities along the value chain, reducing reliance on traditional “wet-only” approaches. By virtually modeling processes, we gain efficiency and precision. ✔️ Automation: Robots, cobots, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and real-time location systems (RTLS) are streamlining operations. Scientists can dedicate more time to value-add tasks, thanks to these automated solutions. ✔️ Advanced Data Technologies: Enterprise recipe management (ERM) merges simulated and real-world data for advanced analysis. This synergy provides deeper insights and enhances overall value. I extend my gratitude to the ISPE & BPCI Lab 5.0 Committee for allowing me to share high-level perspectives from pharmaceutical design, engineering, and manufacturing spaces. As product lines grow increasingly complex, cross-domain awareness sparks innovation.
