As we step into the heart of August, a month showing potential and promise, we find ourselves reflecting on the recent collaboration with the talented minds at Morgan State University with the PI and Co-PI team members (Roni Ellington and Vanessa Dodo Seriki) who have achieved a significant milestone by fully engaging 20+ K-16 "Fellows" in the Maryland Collaborative for Research in Maryland (MD CRUSE) NSF-funded grant (ECR program) from across the state to define, research, and report on the landscape of "Urban STEM Education." It's an accomplishment that has filled all of us involved with gratitude and a deep sense of purpose. MNA was glad to be the evaluator of the grant for three years. With this achievement as our foundation, MNA is now gearing up for the next exhilarating chapter: plunging headfirst into the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded National Research Traineeship (NRT) realm. NRT is dedicated to the effective training of STEM graduate students in high-priority interdisciplinary and/or convergent research areas, through a comprehensive traineeship model that is innovative, evidence-based, and aligned with changing workforce and research needs. Are you presenting yet at our It Takes a Spark STEM conferences happening around Australia? The It Takes a Spark STEM conferences have been running since 2017 and are unique in that they bring together students (Yr 4 - 10) and teachers from across all education sectors to connect with each other, industry, universities and STEM organisations. The aim is to spark sharing and the expansion of what STEM / STEAM can provide to students and teachers with the intent to improve the thinking and practice of all groups. We deliberately focus on Yr 4 - 10 students because this is the period, especially for girls, when they make unconscious decisions about whether they are interested in Science, Maths, Technology, etc. If the students, particularly from low socioeconomic environments, don't experience the breadth and possibilities of STEM for their own lives then they have already tuned out of them before they make career path choices in Yr 9 - 10. It Takes a Spark STEM Conference Find out more at https://lnkd.in/gMuSXEpD

Have you ever been involved in an informal STEM program that started in one place and then expanded to other locations? NGCP and EDC worked together with practitioners in informal STEM learning to create a conference called "Advancing the Conversation on Scaling National Informal STEM Programs," which was funded by the National Science Foundation. After the conference, NGCP, edc.org, and the collaborators developed two resources to help scale informal STEM learning programs and curricula equitably. What's the most common reason students follow a STEM career path? The ASPIRES3 study has the answer. Many in STEM education will know about the ASPIRES study at UCL London. They have just released the third tranche of their research 'ASPIRES3', which now includes survey data from over 47,000 young people between the ages of 10 and 22. The study looks at the educational and employment aspirations, choices, experiences and outcomes of young people in England. The findings are consistent every time a new ASPIRES report is released: In terms of why young people do (or do not) pursue STEM, the longitudinal data revealed that liking their subject was the most common reason reported by young people studying for STEM degrees, followed by feeling competent and ‘good at’ the subject. Enjoyment of a subject starts at a young age. The ASPIRES2 study clearly showed that by age 11 kids had made up their mind whether science was 'for them' or not. House of Science have been delivering fun, hands-on science lessons for over 10 years, with 97% of teachers consistently reporting their students are engaged or highly engaged while using our kits. In our work compiling opportunities for our bi-monthly Improved Insights newsletter, Insights & Opportunities, we come across all kinds of exciting jobs, professional development, and, yes - fellowships! When putting this list together, our goal was to provide an easily accessible, centralized place for folks in our field to see what fellowships are available to them. We’ve intentionally aimed to represent a wide variety of opportunities that span the range of fields and levels of expertise.
