“I don’t know why I bother going on annual leave” I used to say this to myself in the working days before before time off, whilst I was frantically preparing to break up. I used to write a to do list of absolutely EVERYTHING I needed to do and then attempt and do it all. This is completely unrealistic and put unnecessary pressure on myself as it included many things I wouldn’t have got round to doing even if I hadn’t been on annual leave! Recently, I’ve started doing the following: - Getting all urgent tasks completed (for me court directions, cases where limitation or offers are due to expire shortly) - Letting clients I’m in touch with regularly know I’ll be on annual leave - Putting my out of office on (with an alternative contact in case of emergencies) - Switch my phone and laptop off - Stop feeling guilty about the things I haven’t got around to and catastrophising all the awful things that can happen whilst I’m away (which in reality won’t happen if I’m well prepared) And here’s the big one - Forget about work and completely relax Moral of the story? We all need a break from time to time and a change to properly switch off and recharge our batteries. Work will always be there when we get back and we can utilise the support of colleagues to pick up anything urgent in our absence #annualleave
