Why is a talent pipeline such an evasive concept? Have you heard of this term - Talent Pipeline? A talent pipeline is a strategic approach to sourcing, supporting, and ultimately hiring potential candidates for current and future roles within an organization. As the metaphor conveys, much like a pipeline in the industrial sense ensures a steady flow of resources, a talent pipeline ensures a consistent stream of skilled individuals ready to fill key positions as they become available. This method is called proactive recruitment and allows companies to continuously engage with, evaluate, and communicate with potential employees, often before a specific role is even open. A talent pipeline requires.... things 1. A STRUCTURE (the pipe) to manage, monitor, and guide the flow of candidates 2. A DIRECTION for this flow to go - Are the candidates moving towards a specific role or are they left out in limbo? 3. SUBSTANCE (water) or candidates that make up this flow Without each, it isn't actually a pipeline, it's a pool. What's the difference between a talent pipeline and a talent pool? Well, a pipeline has direction while a pool is more stagnant. In a talent pipeline, the candidates and the employers have a sense of where they are going. Take a look at your pipeline. Does it look more like a pipeline or a pool?

Proactive recruitment is the difference between a hitting the panic button any time there is an unplanned vacancy in your organization, and being able to say, "don't worry, I know a guy". Pipelining. Curated Talent Pools. Networking. Proactive Recruitment. These activities are the best way to reduce agency spend and everyone knows they're important, but too often we fail in our execution to produce meaningful results. Yesterday's webinar on Recruiting to a Workforce Plan revealed that while many organizations utilize a few different channels to develop their talent networks, they are keeping themselves permanently in a state of reactive recruitment. Bucketing all jobs into "Now" or "Not Now". This doesn't need to be the case.
