🎙️🌱 Laura Tierney discusses the numerous challenges students face with social media, technology, and online gambling. However, for every challenge, there's a positive aspect technology can bring to students' lives. The key is helping students navigate these challenges by focusing on positive actions.
Students often experience FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), but some are replacing it with JOMO (Joy of Missing Out). Nearly half of seventh graders feel pressured to reply to texts from family within 10 minutes, not to mention the pressure with friends and group chat drama. Miscommunication is common without tone or body language in texts.
Independent schools report increased explicit content issues, whether fake AI-generated or shared by students. Schools and parents can highlight positive responses to these challenges. For instance, if students receive explicit content, they can use the SHIELD approach:
S: Stop: Pause and don't react impulsively.
H: Huddle: Talk to a trusted adult.
I: Inform: Flag it on the platform.
E: Evidence: Take a screenshot if needed.
L: Limit: Block the sender.
D: Direct: Guide others on how to help.
Focusing on these positive steps helps navigate the challenges of social media. 💬📱✨
