We want to take a minute to shout out our August work anniversaries! Congrats to Shane Lester, celebrating five years, Robert T., celebrating four years, and Mitchell C. and Joe C. celebrating two years! Here are their thoughts on working at ISE and what it means to them. Shane, Security Analyst: "I love all the opportunities I have to work on different types of projects at ISE. Software, hardware, and occasionally streaming live talks for conferences!" Robert, Associate Security Analyst: "Something about ISE that is important to me is the chance to partake in interesting and challenging projects that challenge me to grow my application security skillset, and the support that ISE provides for us to also grow our skillsets outside of work. In addition to that, working alongside very sharp people who are extremely talented in this area as well is something I definitely value about working here." Mitchell, Software Developer: "The great thing about ISE is that it offers amazing flexibility, which has allowed me to balance my professional and personal lives better than ever over the last couple years. I’ve been able to travel lots as I love to do, visit family and friends, and work from anywhere. It’s not always fun and games in life like that though; sometimes “life happens” too, but the company is always totally understanding and accommodating, which I’ve realized is so important to me. But most of all, I love working on the Start team because it continues to challenge me. I started as an associate developer, and in just two years my skills have grown tremendously. Recently I have been begun to take the dev lead on projects for the first time, which is incredible! Looking forward to the years to come!" Joe, Project Manager: "I started a new role in the PMO department working with the analysts and its been incredible getting to learn and understand the technical aspects of what our awesome analysts do at ISE." Thanks team for all your hard work and dedication! #workanniversary #community #happyworkanniversary

Today marks my 10 year anniversary of working here at B4 Networks Inc. I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately, as it’s not a small milestone for me. I’ve been reflecting on that for the past little while…to give some insight, when I started working here I hadn’t met my wife yet, I didn't have my amazing kids, and I was still young. Looking back on the past decade, there are lots of stories to tell. As a company, we’ve grown from 4 people to the 22 we have today. We’ve moved offices twice, and expanded our office within a few years of moving in. We’ve focused on contract offerings instead of hourly. We’ve bought another business. We’ve won 7 consecutive awards for being one best managed IT companies in Canada. Starting as a tech and moving into a management and leadership role has also been a journey. I’m not afraid to admit that I’ve made many mistakes along the way. Tech mistakes like forgetting to turn on backups which lead to a cryptolocker incident, or rebooting a client network at 9:30am instead of pm. Moving into a leadership position I’ve made plenty of mistakes there as well. The biggest mistake in leadership is the mistake of thinking that being a leader is about status. It’s not. One of the things that I have learned is that being a leader is sacrifice, not status. When I say that being a leader is about sacrifice, what I mean is this: it’s not all about what’s best for ME, it’s about what’s best for US. Working together as a team and for the team, we are able to elevate everyone together. It’s a very easy concept to understand, but an incredibly difficult one to do. This has always been one of the most rewarding things to watch. This could be the 2 straight days of troubleshooting a downed network, swapping techs in and out on a sleep schedule. Or it could be scrounging for parts so that we can build a server and get a client going again ASAP. Or even a meeting where we come up with resolutions to present. When we work as a team, we’re all stronger than our individual parts. And when someone on the team makes a mistake, and they will, we don’t focus on the mistake, we focus on the solution. We all make mistakes, and generally speaking we beat ourselves up more than any boss or manager could. And that’s where being a leader comes into play. Whether it’s your job title or not, being a leader means turning to your colleagues and telling them “I’ve got your back. There’s nothing you can break that we can’t help put back together. We believe in you, even if you don’t believe in yourself.” (Simon Sinek) If you know that you have a whole team of people who believe in you, that’s a powerful feeling. And it’s a feeling that I’ve had for the last 10 years. So thank you to each and every member of the B4 team for making working here the joy that it is. Thank you for all the of the good times, and the bad. Thank you for letting me make and learn from my mistakes, and most of all thank you all for being the amazing people you are.
