Is this another step towards wave energy powering more homes? 🌊🏠 Swedish company CorPower Ocean is making significant progress with their CorPower C4 device, a commercial-scale wave energy converter. After a successful seven-week operational period, the C4 is now exporting power to Portugal's grid. Situated off Aguçadoura's northern coastline, the device has been fully commissioned, and — happily for the CorPower team — is operating as designed. It's a seriously clever piece of kit: thanks to onboard sensors and control systems, the C4 automatically adapts to varying ocean conditions. Having been up and running since August, the team are focusing on increasing the machine's power capture, especially during storms. One interesting tech feature is the ‘WaveSpring’ phase control technology. When activated, it amplifies the device's motion, allowing it to move more than the height of incoming waves, and, in turn, capture more energy. The device can be monitored remotely and is equipped with a UPS mode so the essential sensing and control functionalities remain active even during grid failures. Soon, it’ll be taken to the Port of Viana do Castelo for a check-up, setting the stage for efficient maintenance of future wave farms. Is this the wave of the future? As part of its efforts to achieve net zero fossil carbon dioxide emissions, Mälarenergi AB has partnered with ABB to upgrade its switchgear with retrofit solutions at its cogeneration plant in Västerås. By replacing the plant's aging circuit breakers with modern #Emax2 models – featuring #Ekip Hi-Touch relay protection and energy metering – the electrical circuits are not only fully protected, but feature new technologies that reduce energy consumption, saving valuable time, costs and resources.
