MTN Nigeria Disconnects 4.2 Million Connections Following NCC’s NIN-SIM Mandate MTN Nigeria has officially disconnected 4.2 million subscribers from its network as of February 28, 2024, for failing to link their National Identification Numbers (NIN) with their mobile SIM cards. This decisive action, a direct response to the NCC's December 2023 ultimatum, aimed at boosting the security and authenticity of telecom subscribers, saw 19 million lines undergo the NIN verification process. MTN Nigeria in its latest financial disclosure, revealed that while 4.3 million lines were successfully verified against NIN submissions, the remaining unverified lines, attributed to low-value subscribers, were disconnected to comply with the regulatory directive, mitigating significant revenue impact. Under the leadership of CEO Karl Olutokun Toriola, MTN Nigeria continues to navigate these regulatory waters with a strategic focus on network enhancement and customer engagement, ensuring minimal disruption to service. Despite the substantial line cuts, MTN reported a net growth, adding over 4 million new subscribers in 2023, elevating its total subscriber base to 79.7 million, with data subscribers climbing by 5 million to 44.6 million. #MTNNigeria #NINSIMLinkage #TelecomRegulations #DigitalIdentity #NetworkSecurity

By The Finance Ghost 05 Nov 2023 Follow 0 A share price chart for MTN is something you need a strong stomach for. Thus far in 2023, the share price has lost nearly 30% of its value. That’s even worse than Telkom (down 26%) and a lot worse than Vodacom, which has lost 16% this year. It’s a sea of red for telecoms.

A little known fact is that all mobile networks now have (broadly) the same network quality and coverage, due to roaming agreements between all the major players. So when choosing between Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, Telkom, Capitec, Melon Mobile etc, the only relevant criteria should be which provider has the best quality of customer service and package price / flexibility.

A gentleman comparing mobile data bundles across Telcos in Ghana and the question I ask is why should we pay more from a Significant Market Power Telco like MTN Ghana with the numbers as compared to Non-Significant Market Power Telcos like Vodafone Ghana and AT Ghana ?
