My heart reaches out to all my Caribbean brothers and sisters affected throughout the islands. Particularly those who have lost #homes and #livelihoods... and who have no idea what will happen next. We are also still so early in the hurricane season. #ClimateChange is truly causing #displacement of people at a rate that we have not seen before. I pray against all predictions, in the hope that the rest of the season will be quiet. In these times, it is a stark demonstration of how #disaster hits differently when you live on an #island. Petit Martinique is 0.9 sq miles. What do you do when you have devastation on a land mass so small... there is nowhere to go. Union Island and Carriacou both recorded more than 90% damage - premilinary estimates for Union Island is 97%. Where do you go? So people are sheltering in their damaged houses, or in the preschool which is leaking and doesn't have a proper bathroom. And the rain continues. The ATM isn't working and you can't buy supplies. Agriculture has been destroyed so you have no food to eat. The water system was based on rainwater and all the tanks are destroyed. Living on a #smallisland can be very very risky. Where have these terrible #hurricanes come from? Who does what to cause them to be so much worse than they were before? And who pays for the damage, when the islands are thrust back #decades of lost #development initiatives? How come the #stormsurges are so much worse than they used to be? Is this because #sealevels have risen? Why is are sea leavels rising? What is causing all of this #heat that melts the #glaciers? Who is going to do what about it? Will our tiny island economies continue to be forced to pay???
