Andrew Huberman has a strategy to amass millions of followers: excessively long-form content that has to played almost non-stop in the background, use jargon to sound “sciencey”, & appeal to authority by repeating his academic credentials. The problem: his podcast is rife with misinformation that harms public health & science literacy. Repetition creates belief. It’s the same tactic used by cult leaders. And he is very effective getting buy-in to profit off misinformation. His episode on cold and flu was an egregious fabrication of basic immunology and misleading claims about what IS evidence-based. This week, we discussed the harms of this using several recent episodes as examples, his popular appeal, issues with “data” he cherry-picks, & clear financial motives promoting unproven, unregulated, & potentially harmful supplements.
