𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐮𝐱 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐱 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠? 𝐃𝐨 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞? Luke Ylias asked some very relevant questions in response to my post below which I think warrant a real answer. My take (keeping in mind I'm not a Designer): between Game and Product UI/UX Design, there are clear similarities in processes used: research, synthesis, concept, develop, deploy etc. are universal, each involving nominally similar tasks. But there are fundamental differences in purpose, execution, impact and perceived value, which, in practice, make it difficult to transition from Design for Product to Design for Games. Several reasons why: - 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬/𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 #productdesign generally measures success in commercial metrics: user acquisition/conversion/retention, revenue generated, business processes optimized, friction reduced, efficiency, etc. #uiuxdesign for games aims to immerse the user, provide contextual information in support of game or combat mechanics, narrative ambitions, etc. and orchestrate friction in such a way that it provides a ‘fair’ challenge. I suppose you could say that success in this respect centers on 'emotional' metrics. - 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 Research for Product Design identifies opportunities to reduce user pain points/friction, extend the feature set, maximize KPI's and so on In UI/UX for Games, user research informs and influences gameplay/combat mechanics, 3C and level design, game balancing and more - 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Visual treatment in design for Product generally involves language systems that adhere to brand or style guides, and aim to inform users effectively, with clarity and consistency. Assets are typically vector based. In Games, overall visual treatment is subject to the genre and art direction of the game, and is intended to enhance the player experience. Assets required can vary wildly, and are typically (digitally) hand painted. - 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 Product UI/UX Design frequently involves questions of cross-compatibility (browser, Windows/Mac, Android/iOS), n-tier architecture, database/back end integration, etc. Game UI/UX Design considers topics such as performance/latency, controller/input features and mapping, memory usage, engine integration, accessibility, and more Overall, this means that, for UI/UX vacancies that focus on in-game work, we almost exclusively look for candidates whose past experience and portfolio showcase direct familiarity with the type of challenges we're tackling. I recognize that may sound disappointing, but do keep in mind: of course there are also 𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑦 areas in the games industry where Product Designers are needed 🙂 #gamejobs

Struggles of a UI/UX Designer: A Recent Journey I wanted to share a recent experience that I believe many of my fellow UI/UX designers can relate to. It's been a bit of a rollercoaster, to say the least. Just a few weeks ago, I had what seemed like the perfect opportunity. I went through two rounds of interviews for a part-time position, and everything felt incredibly promising. The client seemed impressed with my profile and the discussions we had during the interviews left me feeling confident. I was sure this was finally it – the job I'd been waiting for. However, despite all the positive signs, I received a rejection notification shortly after. It was disheartening, to say the least. I couldn't help but wonder if it was a reflection of the current job market or perhaps something else entirely. The position itself was only for a two-week duration, with compensation that didn't quite match up to my level of experience – over six years in the field. It left me questioning whether the industry expectations were shifting, or if this was just an isolated incident. But despite the setback, I'm not disheartened. I know that these challenges are part and parcel of the journey, and I'm determined to keep pushing forward. I believe that the right opportunity is out there, waiting for me to seize it. So, here's to resilience and perseverance. Hey folks, I just wanted to share one of my works with you all, in which I designed the desktop version of a job seeker profile page for a UI/UX intern assignment. The goal of this assignment was to design an interface for a job seeker with the necessary details like fields for Name, Contact Number, Email Address, Qualifications, Resume, Desired Job Position, Expected Salary, and any other information that I deemed necessary. I followed good practice for the design process - started with wireframing, used auto-layout to make components for different sections, arranged needed typography, and followed the given color scheme. 🚀 Day 15 of My Job Search Challenge! 🚀 (Setting a goal to land a UI/UX Designer job within 30 days.) Today, I’m sharing two significant updates: ▶ Project Redesign Completed: I have finally finished the redesign of my project. This process was intense and productive. I also spent an additional 5 hours on my course, deepening my knowledge in UI/UX design. I’ll be showcasing the results very soon! ▶ New Hobby: A long-time dream of mine has come true – I bought a tattoo machine and tried it out on artificial skin for the first time. Tattooing has always fascinated me as an art form, and now I get to try it myself. While this won't be my main job, as a hobby, it brings me a lot of joy and satisfaction. As a UI/UX designer, I've come to realize that our job is a lot like being a professional juggler. Positioning yourself as a UI/UX designer and finding the right job can be a serious challenge, especially when transitioning from a different career. I’ve earned tons of experiences and skills from my previous roles, but I often wonder: is it right to list them here? Are they really irrelevant? With no real experience in this market, I find myself applying as a junior, even though I’m older than the typical junior candidate. The negative responses to my applications can be disheartening. I polish my UI/UX portfolio daily, but it’s honestly harder than I expected. It seems it will never be perfect, nor finished. I’m bombarded with amazing design samples and portfolios, realizing that those designers are also seeking jobs, often with more experience and more beautiful, real projects as showcases. But this isn’t a hopeless verbalization—just me, thinking out loud. If you’ve been through this transition or have advice, I’d love to connect.
