I’ve engaged in A LOT of legal conversations over the past few years. My experience in my organization has mostly been a race war- people misquoting diversity, fearing what it means for leaders from marginalized groups to be in power, and sitting back as opposing sides push to either maintain the status quo or increase access to predominately white spaces. Laws are not as progressive as the research of scholars who define terms and lay out the outcomes of race-related systemic issues and actions in organizations. I’ve witnessed firsthand how humanity and common sense aren’t always centered in the law. I’ve also learned how easy it is for crafty people with little to no integrity to manipulate the legal system for their gain. To those of you doing the work that’s operationalizing discrimination and preventing it from crushing vulnerable people, thank you. We must translate this work to policies at whatever level we hold power. This month, I’m focusing on policy and accomplice in my Accomplice Academy. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gxA23Z6b
Affirmative Action in higher education has served as the most effective structural intervention to increase pathways to opportunity and economic mobility for Black and Brown communities for 45 years. SCOTUS’ decision will hinder the ability of colleges and universities to enact effective anti-racist policies toward building and maintaining more diverse institutions and creating pathways for educational opportunity. Developmental education is a critical issue at community colleges, according to a new UPDATE on Research and Leadership piece by Nina Owolabi and Stacy Bennett, Ph.D. When first introduced, developmental education was considered a means to support students in their pursuit of college-level courses. More recently, however, much of the research and discussion about developmental education has had a decidedly negative tone. In a new opinion piece for The Chronicle of Higher Education, Ted Hadzi-Antich Jr., Associate Professor of Government at Austin Community College and founder of The Great Questions Foundation, shares how liberal education courses and programs are growing and thriving at community colleges—many with support from the Teagle Foundation: "This perception that community colleges are more oriented toward the trades than the liberal arts is still common, but it’s also outdated and false. The primary function of community colleges in our society has been steadily shifting away from technical and pre-professional education and toward liberal education for some time now ... As students are increasingly losing access to liberal-education courses and programs at private and state institutions, the opposite seems to be happening at community colleges. The mission in practice of community colleges today is not what it was a generation ago. According to enrollment trends and degree completion, that mission, now and for the foreseeable future, has a lot to do with liberal education. In well-designed lower-division humanities and liberal-arts courses, community-college students talk about common human values and concerns, across their personal and principled differences. There, they begin to build a shared sense of being human together, as they recognize the complexity of our moral, political, and social lives."
