Did you know that in Australia, 68% of LGBTQIA+ employees aren't out to everyone at work, 2 in 3 LGBTQIA+ youth face abuse because of their identity, and 35% of LGBTQIA+ Australians have experienced verbal abuse in the past year? Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). This year's theme is- No one left behind: Equality, Freedom and Justice for all. As an inclusive university we mark this day by raising awareness of issues faced by members of the LGBTQIA+ communities. Our IDAHOBIT champion and senior leader, Neil Fowler says 'As a university, and a community, we recognise the importance and value of diversity in all its forms. We strive to be a space where all can grow, and flourish to become the people they want to be. Not just so that they can live their lives to the full, but to affect change across society so that all benefit from the richness and wellness that comes from being part of a truly inclusive society. IDAHOBiT provides an opportunity to raise the profile of the LGBTQIA+ communities and, importantly, send a clear message that the University does not tolerate any form of homophobia, biphobia, intersexism or transphobia.’ The University of Derby is a Top 100 employer in the Stonewall Workplace Index and was re-awarded Gold for its LGBT+ inclusive culture. #InclusionMatters #IDAHOBIT2024 #WellbeingatDerby

At PACFA we are working with our Diversity in Gender, Body, Kinship, and Sexuality Interest Group to reduce explicit and implicit forms of discrimination within counselling and psychotherapeutic practice, within the models under which we practice, and within our organisation and the broader systems in which we operate. The process can be slow, and sometimes painful. It takes considerable labour, often emotional, from all concerned. It requires challenging and being challenged, particularly of our preconceptions and privileges. We do it because it is right and fair. We do it because it is worth the effort for people to feel seen, heard, accepted, and to feel a genuine sense of belonging. We do it because as counsellors, psychotherapists and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island healing practitioners we are dedicated to co-creating environments in which people can feel safe to be themselves. #pacfa #counselling #psychotherapy

A recent report by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) Institute sheds light on a concerning trend: a decline in support for LGBTQ+ rights nationwide. Despite ongoing efforts, there's a palpable decrease in backing, especially within specific population segments. The statistics are telling: from a high of 72 percent supporting marriage equality in 2021, the figures have dwindled to 66 percent in 2023.
