Concluded a fulfilling Product Management internship with Shopee in late 2023. #lifeatshopee was truly unmatched as I was given full ownership of a task classification standardisation project, wrote my first ever product requirements document (PRD) and went through iterative feasibility studies, technical design discussions and PRD reviews. This hands-on experience delved into the complexities of a highly technical backend-focused paid notifications product. It involved designing product components, understanding technical architecture, and integrating various in house systems for business governance. Here are some key insights which I highlighted during the end of internship sharing: 1. Balancing technical intricacies with business needs is vital for robust product development 2. Targeted data analysis and aligning with broader business objectives avoids the application of digital lipstick 3. Effective stakeholder communication is foundational for PM success. Not to sugarcoat the reality, more often than not I was stretched beyond my comfort level and placed in positions which demanded adaptability and the ability to discern convoluted product definitions. Despite the challenges, I'm grateful for the mentorship of Yi-Min Lim, for being there to guide my thinking without spoonfeeding me answers, providing a safe space for me to evaluate my decisions while defining product components. 𝐌𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐈 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝. The first real job I had as a product marketer was for an up-and-coming e-commerce brand whose target audience was Africans in the diaspora. When I came on board, my goal was simple - 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒊𝒕𝒔 𝒇𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒂𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆. As simple as that may sound, it wasn't easy. But with six months on the job, here's what I learned. 1. It is your duty to call out the developers on what they've created. As a product marketer, you have studied what the clients want, so changes should be made, and new features must be added. 2. You have to research competitors, their products, and their marketing strategies. Use these insights to differentiate your products and develop a unique positioning. I'd spend nights looking at the websites and social media platforms of Jumia. Then, my next presentation would be about the ideas I had created on how to get to their level and exceed them. 3. Teamwork is vital to get leads. Everyone must play their part. Ideas must be shared from the PMM (Product Marketing Manager) to the new intern. 4. Be super creative with your marketing campaigns. Create mind-blowing ideas to drive awareness of the product. Today, I work with an escrow service company called Eulav Escrow Payment Check out our page to know more about our amazing product. Drinking from the firehose, again. That’s how my internship at L'Oréal felt like, right off the back of the intense experience at MIT. I took this internship to expose myself to the FMCG industry as well as to a new area of marketing: PR and Brand Comms. Boy, it was certainly a steep learning experience. Being in a new industry was tough, but doing Brand Comms for a luxury brand like Lancôme was a whole other level of challenging. It needed me to learn how to switch my mindset from ‘mass’ to ‘premium’, how to handle things in a super agile manner, and understanding the psyche of the luxury consumer (and the KOLs they follow). At the same time, I worked on research and recommendations to make this heritage brand more appealing to younger customers - stretching my time thin as well. Despite the challenges, I got what I came for - in 3 months, I learned more about a whole other part of marketing that had non-digital components, got a glimpse at the beauty industry, and learned how to manage my priorities better. I also met some great people here, including old friends from Shopee. Thank you to my manager Lydia Chan for giving me the opportunity to experience this, and to Michelle Ng for sharing about the internship program at L’Oreal. It has added a lot ot value as I pursue my post-MBA career. 🚀 Reflecting on an Incredible 5-Month Internship Journey 🚀 As my internship at Lazada Logistics comes to an end after 5 months, I find myself reflecting on an enriching and dynamic experience that has profoundly shaped my professional journey. From day one, diving into the Logistics field, I embraced a whirlwind of learning. It wasn't just about mastering technical skills like Product or Data Analytics Skills but also discovering the invaluable role of adaptability and collaboration in overcoming challenges. One of the most vivid soft skills I learned from Kahfi Rohman during this tenure is the art of negotiation. Balancing diverse strengths and weaknesses while understanding everyone's busy schedules taught me the importance of setting realistic expectations and effective negotiation. It's been an eye-opener to navigate these interactions with stakeholders. On the hard skills front, my journey into data analytics stands out as a challenging yet enriching experience. I had the chance to contribute to Billing Digitalization by handling millions of data records, which was a daunting task, especially without familiarity with SQL or data analytics tools. However, diving headfirst into this project allowed me to acquire skills in these areas swiftly. The learning curve was steep. Completing 22 essential features and achieving an 80% accuracy rate gave me recognition by the data team. It was a rewarding experience that emphasized the importance of persistence and creative thinking. None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support and guidance from Kahfi Rohman and Tiara Rinandi. Your insights and encouragement have been instrumental in shaping my approach to the Product field. Special shoutout to Al Hadiid Rzeznik Ar Razy and Rayna Virdania, who have made the experience more comfortable and colorful. I've been doing my internship as a Key Opinion Leader Specialist at Lazada for about a month and a half now. I'm really thankful for all the great experiences I've had that have helped me grow, both professionally and personally. Every day, I've been learning about managing KOLs and improving my communication and decision-making skills. It's been a journey full of new challenges and opportunities to become better. During my time, I got involved in a range of tasks and projects. I teamed up with Brand Ambassadors, kept an eye on how our campaigns were going, checked out how our promotions were doing, and worked with the creative agency team. On top of that, I organized when our content would be published and managed to get things done even when we were short on time and resources. I learned a lot during this time. First off, I got a better grasp of digital marketing and branding strategies, especially when it comes to making online content and working with influencers. Secondly, I got better at analyzing data using programs like Excel, which helped me understand how people behave online. Lastly, I improved my communication and negotiation skills by talking with different people involved in our projects. Looking ahead, I've got some plans to keep getting better at my job. Firstly, I want to keep learning about digital marketing by keeping up with what's happening in the industry. I also want to work more closely with influencers and the creative team to make our campaigns even better. Plus, I want to get better at managing my time so I can get things done more efficiently. The average tenure of an intern at growth.sg is almost 12 months. No, we're not underpaying/exploiting anyone. No, we're not on year-long uni programs. And no, we don't do fluffy "corporate culture" stuff like pong tables and fancy yacht trips (are they even still a thing?). Instead, here's what we do: Airdrop our folks into the wild battlefields, with uncomfortable positions and sometimes malfunctioning equipment. Offer highly painstaking, detailed, crunching, and grinding work (without tryouts - no "let's try this and see how") that nauseates the average folk on the street. Pack calendars and to-do lists to the brim (and it never ends!) while sparing absolutely no slack (no such thing as "oh they're tired so let's let this typo slide"). Wait, there's more! We also... Put our people at the forefront of the business, fully exposing them to our unique venture studio x digital consultancy business model, with full access to highly-present stakeholders who are all fully bought-in. Empower interns and 'adults' alike to take full responsibility + action bias of projects (ask for forgiveness, not approval) Project owners becoming so adept and spending up to 3x less effort while earning the same fee, and that means more income opportunities with us. The result? Internships extended semester after semester; freelancers choosing to work with us over larger agencies/clients. Alumni going on to work at Grab, Shopee, and Publicis Groupe.
