Managing Director Ramboll UK, winner of the WICE Best Woman in Environment and Sustainability award, 2021, EIC Chair, ACE Group Board Member
I am so grateful to the fantastic people who make up Ramboll and who worked together so effectively to enable us to achieve our best year ever in 2023 globally and in the UK. Once again, the UK put on a strong performance achieving 19% organic growth in 2023 and our most profitable year ever. This continues our growth trajectory, which has seen the business almost double in size since 2016. As one of the top performing geographies, we achieved this growth despite difficult market challenges, including inflationary pressures which had a direct impact on planned infrastructure investment, notably HS2. The failed offshore wind auction in September was a further blow to the UK wind sector, however I’m optimistic about more promising outcomes this year. The diversity of our business mix has helped us navigate these challenges, with exceptional demand for our green energy transition services; cloud computing and AI; and life sciences and health, all supporting our UK growth. Our ports and marine sector has also grown by over 40% in response to the impact of Brexit and renewable energy opportunities. In fact, our Transport UK market as a whole grew organically by 27%. Meanwhile, we saw our Environment & Health market boosted by accelerated growth in the high-tech and renewable energy sectors, with revenues growing by 40% and 30% respectively. Standout UK project wins include the sustainable refurbishment of 3 Sheldon Square, a 10-storey commercial office in London. Circular principles were applied to improve the operational efficiency by over 66%, compared to a new development in the construction phase. I am immensely proud of the UK success story which is above all grounded in our commitment to our people – our voluntary attrition falling below 10% speaks for itself.

In a significant move towards inclusivity and sustainability, the Australian Government has allocated $5.5 million towards the development of the First Nations Clean Energy Strategy—a pivotal initiative falling under the National Energy Transformation Partnership. Giving Voice to First Nations in Renewable Energy The strategy is designed to empower First Nations people by providing them with a voice in shaping renewable energy policies and programs. This collaborative effort aims to pinpoint areas for improvement and opportunities for future investment, ensuring that the strategy is not only comprehensive but also tailored to the specific needs and aspirations of First Nations communities. Collaborative Development Process To ensure the strategy's effectiveness, the Australian government is actively working with key stakeholders, including the First Nations Clean Energy and Emission Reduction Advisory Committee, the National Indigenous Australians Agency, and various First Nations communities and organisations, including the First Nations Clean Energy Network. State and territory governments are also integral partners in this collective effort. Harnessing Local and Cultural Knowledge Recognising the pivotal role of First Nations people in the Clean Energy Transformation, the strategy aims to leverage their strong local and cultural knowledge. Many First Nations communities currently face the dual challenges of climate change impacts and unreliable, costly power sources. Their unique insights into Country management should inform Australia's journey towards achieving net-zero emissions. Fostering Collaboration and Respect Beyond its environmental objectives, the strategy seeks to foster collaboration, consensus, and innovative approaches to working with First Nations people. It places a strong emphasis on respecting First Nations cultural heritage, knowledge, and connections to land and sea Country. Your Voice Matters: Public Consultation Open As part of this inclusive approach, public consultation is now open, inviting valuable perspectives on the focus areas for Australia's First Nations Clean Energy Strategy. Here's how you can have your say and contribute to this transformative initiative: 1. Read the consultation paper. 2. Provide a written submission (optional). 3. Share your feedback by completing the online form on the consultation hub.
