Last Friday, our CEO Hubert Martens shared his experience as a serial entrepreneur in the MedTech industry with the latest cohort of HighTechXL, a deep tech venture builder at High Tech Campus Eindhoven. This year they are focusing on building MedTech startups in their program HealthTechXL - a collaboration with BOM (Brabant Development Agency) and Philips, among others. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Hubert shared the Salvia story, and lessons learned when discussing the art of innovation. He sees innovation as a continuous cycle with four key steps: 1. Problem: Define the problem you're trying to solve 🤔. Regardless of the field or the size of our teams, as innovators, we need to understand the problem we’re trying to solve from its core to all the nitty-gritty details around it. 2. Solution: After thoroughly studying and understanding the problem, you should consider a conceptual solution 💡. Think freely, without limitations. How will your concept benefit the different stakeholders? 3. Technology: Next, look for the technology that can enable your solution. Sometimes there may be multiple technologies that can do the job, and you will need to choose one based on your criteria. Other times, there may not be a suitable technology available, requiring the development of a new technology 🛠️. 4. Product: Bring everything together and develop a concept. The first times you go through this cycle, this may not even be an actual product. At Salvia, for example, we have gone through this cycle several times, just conceptualizing ideas and using those concepts to decide how to proceed 🔄. Finally, after several cycles, we had the first prototypes ready for testing. Hubert recently wrote a blog post about it. Is #deeptech a good investment thesis? Well that would be like asking the question, is a app based business a good or bad investment 🚀 - The only answer is it depends. I recently had a coffee ☕ meeting with PreSeed Ventures regarding their new #deeptechfond which will be looking for #earlystage investments. I have on some of my previous posts shared #spinout (university #startup with #ipr based on #research) generally performs better than the counter parts, based on data from DTU - Technical University of Denmark and DTU Skylab . Which means that knowledge based deeptech score higher on most #kpi (expect speed to market) So are these cases #venture cases? My clear answer is #yes in both my conversations with Dr. ir. Ana Koller and Jacob Graves Beck. And here are my reflections on why. DTU is a relatively small university on a global scale with explicit emphasis on #entrepreneurship that is less than a decade old set in motion by Anders Overgaard Bjarklev, Marianne Thellersen and Mikkel Sørensen. In spite of this short experience and size, we still produce #unicorns like 3Shape and NKT Photonics. And some companies that could have reached these heights earlier with better capital infrastructure. But we also have the next generation of companies claiming the growth 📈 hills to become unicorns who will it be? Eupry Reshape Biotech NIL Technology Norlase MASH Makes So statistically, then there is a higher frequency of unicorns among deeptech and they have a higher likelihood of reaching higher valuations with reduced risks other than time 🤔 This leaves me with the question, are we or have we become a unicorn factory or is it in our DNA 🧬 to fight the odds?

Demcon’s High Tech Campus Eindhoven location is a strategic entry point into something bigger: inventions of the future. “There are a lot of startups and a lot of innovative things that are going on here. We want to be part of that, and it's easier when you are located here and not just a visitor,” says Barend Vermeulen, Managing Director of DEMCON high-tech systems Eindhoven. The HTCE office was a strategic choice. Although small, the location is a close touchpoint for its existing customers and a starting point for new potential clients, especially local startups. Demcon works with its clients to engineer, develop and manufacture innovative, high-end systems and products. The company works in many markets, including high-tech systems, aerospace, energy and life sciences and health. Demcon’s explicit goal is to create meaningful #innovations that solve society’s big challenges and support small companies as they pursue them. “We want to support #startups that one day will become scale-ups. We want to build a partnership and grow with them. We are constantly looking for synergy,” Vermeulen says. Demcon came to the right place if they want to work with "inventions of the future." Congratulations to Alphabeats, who took home a Gerard & Anton Award at the 9th annual awards event and Startup BBQ! HighTechXL alumni have received the coveted award ever year except 2014. Named to the Top 10 list of most promising startups in the region, Alphabeats is the 15th HighTechXL alum who has received the award. Alphabeats uses neurofeedback technology developed at Philips, an EEG headband and an advanced app to train your brain to control alpha waves. This helps elite athletes enter a “flow” state and improve their mental performance. Alphabeats completed the HighTechXL deep tech venture builder in 2020. They received investment from LUMO Labs and joined their venture builder program in 2021. Last fall, Alphabeats announced a €1.5 million seed round, which was led by ecosystem partner DeepTechXL. All this happened within 100 meters on High Tech Campus Eindhoven. Talk about open innovation. Alphabeats just launched their Pioneers Program with partner Garmin and are entering the U.S. market. Joining forces for innovation! The HealthTechXL program, a collaboration between industry leaders like Philips, HighTechXL, Brabantse Ontwikkelings Maatschappij (BOM), DeepTechXL, and Invest-NL, is on a mission to empower advanced medical tech startups in Brainport Eindhoven. Since September, this initiative is guiding startups in developing healthcare solutions. The goal? Elevate accessibility in healthcare through innovation. Supported by HighTechXL and BOM, successful startups might secure investments from BOM, DeepTechXL, and Invest-NL's Deep Tech Fund over the next three years. This program not only fosters innovation but also retains technical talent in Brainport Eindhoven. It's all about addressing societal challenges with tech-driven entrepreneurship. Recent progress? 13 HealthTech Ventures went through Gate 1 on October 10th, where teams presented their business propositions to the HighTechXL team, industry experts, and members of the Eindhoven Startup Alliance HighTechXL ecosystem. Six startups met all the criteria and progressed to Gate 2, which occurred on December 12th. At this stage, three successfully passed the gate while two have the opportunity for a reevaluation in the coming weeks. Moreover, two consultancy propositions are developing next to the HealthTechXL program. Exciting times ahead!
