The gaps in funding for female founders are widely known. Indeed, in 2020, women received only 2% of VC funding globally – a number that has not changed much in 10 years. Ever faced something similar in fundraising? 🙃 While we work toward changing the status quo in the startup ecosystem, and prep female founders to get funding despite a challenging ecosystem - and look forward to a time when this isn't the case - it's important to highlight the challenges that female founders face. That's why Antler VC's latest survey resonated with us. As things stand, the vast majority (92%) of women surveyed believe that VCs aren't doing enough to support women founders. We know that having more female investors is a huge part of this. Beyond that, founders agree that VCs should all be sharing their data on the number of women they include in their portfolios.

When I was at the EBAN Investor Summit, I was surprised to hear that about 10% of the Angel Groups in Europe were women. In the US, the average across Angel Groups is 23%... When Elaine Werffeli does her overview of the Seattle Angel Groups, she tracks the engagement. Overall, seattle seems to be beating that number. For Seattle Angel Conference, we have run closer to 33% female participation. We have been working to have 50/50 gender match among our investors for some time (close to a decade as an explicit goal ) Only one time have we been able to achieve a 50/50 balance. Some of the Seattle Angel Conference alumni investors will join Elaine Werffeli to talk about their journey into Angel Investing at this workshop on May 2nd. Please take a moment to ask your friends and colleagues about their interest in how they would like to see innovation make the world better. Angel Investing is a path to having insight into the shape of the future and to have the ability to directly impact progress into the future.

"When people see that a female founder has a male investor, they assume she must have received his investment because she is competent, and her startup is strong, But when people see that a female founder has a female investor, they attribute her investment success to her gender rather than her competence...regardless of her actual qualifications." If this observation is true, we also face deeply ingrained bias against women investors... as if to say, a woman will only invest in a woman because she is a female, regardless of her business competence or potential. Of course, statistically, we know that women are excellent at business, deliver higher ROI, and are astute investors. Emerging managers (most of whom are women) have posted better returns than established funds in recent years. Women invest in women because they know the potential and opportunity cost at stake if women don't get funded; they recognize the need and do something about it. Anyone, irrespective of gender, who invests in a woman-owned business, startup, or fund is shifting the landscape of innovation and impact toward better balance, diversity, and equity.
