Housed within our collection is a significant document penned by none other than Thomas Paine. Dated 19 June 1788 and originating from Symonds Inn, this manuscript serves as an application for a patent relating to his pioneering invention: the first pier-less iron arch bridge. This revolutionary design was conceived with the intention of spanning the Schuylkill River in Pennsylvania. In the document, Paine addresses the "King Most Excellent Majesty" elucidating his humble petition. He underscores the novelty of his method, emphasizing that after considerable study and financial expenditure, he has devised a technique to construct arches, vaulted roofs, and ceilings, using iron or wood. This method he asserts is distinctively different from existing practices allowing for structures to span several hundred feet more than what contemporary architectural practices could achieve. Paine's desire was to secure the exclusive benefits of his innovative invention and the Royal Letters Patent specifically for Scotland for a duration of fourteen years in accordance with existing statutes. To further affirm the authenticity of his claims, Paine takes an oath in the document reiterating the uniqueness and originality of his invention. He firmly states that his method rooted in new principles surpassing current construction practices and he attests to the novelty of his invention, declaring that, to his knowledge, no other individual has previously conceived or implemented such a design. The Wallace Monument, also known as the National Wallace Monument, is a 67-meter tower perched atop Abbey Craig of Scotland, a hilltop that provides a panoramic view of Stirling. It is in honor of Sir William Wallace, a Scottish hero from the 13th and 14th centuries. The public can access the tower by paying a small entrance fee.
