At STRAT, we've been committed to advancing the cause of gender equality by featuring a majority of female speakers for the past 12 years. This isn't the norm for tech-related conferences, but it's something we feel is a high priority. This year's speaker demographics may seem like a step backward to some in the STRAT community. As we search for pro-human AI product design innovation stories, younger white males are significantly more prevalent when it comes to our search for rigorous and relevant case studies. We're pursuing conversations to adjust this and reflect a more balanced demographic by region, but it may take a couple of years. The urgency of bringing our community up to speed on rigorous, well-thought-out use cases of AI in product design is so great that we're willing to temporarily sacrifice one goal for the other. Representation in advertising? It's no secret that the industry has a problem. In fact, research from Extreme Reach found that men accounted for more than two thirds of people appearing in, and 73% of voices heard, in ads. We know that equitable representation isn't just the right thing to do, it's also a driver of brand growth. Working towards gender parity in advertising takes a conscious, intentional strategy, built on a solid measurement foundation. It's refreshing to see SEEHER and Comscore, Inc.'s new GEM Audiences insights tool, which helps brands understand the value of gender equality by assigning a Gender Equity Measurement score to their ads, and guides them towards representation parity. Forty-four percent of Americans have confidence 2024 will be a good year (59% among Gen Z and 65% for Millennials). The chart below shows the areas different generations are most optimistic about in 2024. Members of Gen Z are most optimistic about sustainability and racial equality. It’s almost a decade old now but this campaign by Always still makes me excited about the future and how film can help change perceptions. This campaign challenged societal stereotypes by highlighting how the phrase "like a girl" was often used derogatorily. By featuring real girls and young women performing tasks with strength and confidence they conveyed a message of empowerment and gender equality. In the contemporary marketing landscape, companies and brands are undergoing a notable shift towards leveraging these real-life narratives, fostering human connection, and embracing empathy to construct a more compelling brand presence. Consumers demand authenticity, relatability, and an emotional affiliation with the brands they choose to endorse. To effectively convey these messages and foster genuine connections, companies need directors who can infuse their marketing and content with authenticity and empathy- using the art of storytelling to connect with audiences and spark change.
