🎓Commencement Spotlight 🎓 Our final student spotlight is Laura Abreu Malla ‘24 Congratulations Laura and the entire class of 2024! ___________________________________ What are you most proud of achieving during your Lynch School experience? One of the most remarkable aspects of my development as an academic leader has been the expansion of my strategic vision. I have actively engaged with topics outside my comfort zone, based on emerging trends in higher education. The program has challenged me to critically examine systems of privilege, inequality, and inequity within higher education, in my work context, and daily life. I have gained a more holistic sense of higher education's challenges. These topics have broadened my horizons, enabling me to approach my problem of practice with a more distinctive and inclusive lens, leading to a successfully defended dissertation...process, and product that I am also proud of!

For Shawn Frankton, B.S. 23, graduating from UBalt is a journey a decade in the making. Frankton put school on hold for nearly 10 years to focus on his work and family. He knew coming back in 2023 wouldn't be easy, but he wanted a degree, for his parents who never finished college, for his daughter to inspire her own path, and for himself and his own future. Ivy Tech’s Free Summer program is another example of how Ivy Tech Community College’s faculty, staff, chancellors, president, and trustees are leading in higher education for the benefit of Hoosier students and families, with the generous support of the Indiana General Assembly. Research finds students who earn college credit while in high school are more likely to enroll in college, stay enrolled in college until they graduate, and complete a credential or degree on time or early. Offering free summer courses is part of Ivy Tech’s commitment to increasing college going rates of young adults in Indiana. Last year, more than 4,000 high schoolers enrolled in free courses across the state. Indiana ranks first in the nation for students who are earning college credit in high school thanks to Ivy Tech. Our 19 campuses are working together to ensure more young people leave high school with a plan to earn industry-aligned credentials and degrees quickly and at a lower cost to them and their families. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to be a part of Bay Path University and Cambridge College. Today is a transformational day for all of us here. I am incredibly proud of our fidelity to our missions, our commitment to the communities we serve, our teammates, and our impact on higher education. #StrongerTogether I am also grateful for you, Sandra J. Doran, Michael Giampietro, Kathleen Bourque, Natalia Blank, PhD, Stephen Healey, Niti Seth, Dennis J. Madigan, CMA, our Board of Trustees, and the rest of the teams that trusted me to lead Phase 1 of the acquisition. We did it! Special kudos to the Phase 1 project team; I am a better professional for working with you: Jeremy Anderson, Jessica Sabbagh (rock star), Brittany Riley, MBA, and Susan Poglinco, PhD (and the Core team). I am even more grateful for the continued confidence in me and our super-talented project team as we lead the next phase of this process: Tracy McLaughlin, Shirley Montovani, Madison McGrath, Jonathan Besse, and Susan Poglinco, PhD. As the time to begin making college decisions with my daughter quickly approaches, I have become more cognizant of the fact that there are now more options than ever to accomplish academic goals. That makes me love everything about this partnership between my alma mater and CCBC. Community colleges can be a great option for savings on general education requirements, career education, strengthening the application fir students that might not have scored well on the admissions exams or not so great GPA’s or exploration of interests for those that are still deciding on what path to take prior to committing to a 4-year degree. The easier it is for students to transition from community colleges to 4-year institutions, the greater the community college option becomes for many students.
