When translating your website it is important to note that you will need to do new SEO keyword research for each new language version. If you translate your original keywords, you will likely get literal translations that are not the terms your clients use. You need to think about the URL for the new language version of your website. Your business might be best served by a Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) such as mycompany.uk if you are targeting the United Kingdom. However, this would be a separate website that would need time and resources to create and maintain. Choosing subdirectories (or subfolders) that sit on your existing domain might be more convenient because this would allow you to target multiple languages and markets with one website. Therefore, if you were a Swiss-French company, your UK customers would be directed to yourcompany.com/en-uk instead of yourcompany.com/fr-ch. There are also subdomains or third-level domains, for example, uk.yourcompany.com. This is when localised content sits on a separate subdomain and can be hosted on servers in the target market. This significantly improves page load times, benefiting user experience and SEO. If you want your website to rank for your translated language, you also need to translate the metadata. These elements used by search engines include everything from meta descriptions to tags and image alt texts. Inspired by Elie Berreby's post on International SEO. I had forgotten about this issue XD One of the most troublesome things I faced here at Astera was related to hreflangs. What can happen with translation and hreflang plugins is the creation of duplicate pages with separate URLs. This can then lead to an incorrect hreflang HTML code. Due to a misconfiguration during our setup, we ended up with something like this: 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧: astera.com 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫: astera.com/fr Taking a blog as an example: https://lnkd.in/dWWZVP8W Our incorrect setup led to two versions of international pages for each URL: 1) 𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚.𝐜𝐨𝐦/𝐟𝐫/𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞-𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫/𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫-𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐚/ 2) 𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚.𝐜𝐨𝐦/𝐟𝐫/𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬/𝐬𝐜𝐡é𝐦𝐚-𝐞𝐧-é𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞/ Now imagine this across thousands of pages. Now Google will index one of them, and we don't care which. Both have the same translated content. But the bigger issue was: 𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚.𝐜𝐨𝐦/𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞-𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫/𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫-𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐚/ having an hreflang referencing 𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚.𝐜𝐨𝐦/𝐟𝐫/𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞-𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫/𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫-𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐚/ which in turn referenced 𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚.𝐜𝐨𝐦/𝐟𝐫/𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞-𝐝𝐞-𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬/𝐬𝐜𝐡é𝐦𝐚-𝐞𝐧-é𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞/ as the canonical! If you don't know, hreflangs should be self-referencing and reference each other. Page A should reference Page B in its hreflang and vice versa. They should also be self-canonicalised. This created unnecessary crawling problems and duplicates being indexed. It also hurt our site uniformity. Here's how you can avoid that simple problem that caused me multiple headaches: Make sure the plugin you use doesn't create multiple versions of translated pages!! Make sure the URL translation option is turned off in your Translation plugin of choice. That's it. Pretty simple but can cause so many problems if left unchecked. Multilingual websites are not required to translate all pages - after all, when looking at the example of an international webshop, not every product might be available in every region. What’s most important is that if a page is translated, all variants are marked within the HTML code using hreflang tags. But what happens when one of those pages is blocked from indexation? Good news for human translators and content writers! Here's official feedback from Google on whether a) auto-translated content and b) AI-generated first drafts could affect ranking negatively. 👇 a) Google's advice on automatically translated content: "If the auto-translation is of low quality*, maybe. You should ensure that a human native in those languages reviews and perhaps fixes these translations to ensure that the content is actually helpful for users." * My advice: the output quality of AI- and machine-translated content often is very low. And: customers get higher-quality content if human professionals translate from scratch, rather than trying to "fix" a poor AI- or machine translation. Of course, you could block crawling of automatically translated content, but what's the point if you could have *good* content that could make you visible online in your chosen target market? Also, consider Google's answer to question b) below - this surely also goes for translated content. b) Google's advice on AI-generated first drafts suggests that it's *not* enough to hire human editors to review/"humanise" content and implement SEO/branding guidelines: "What matters to us is the overall quality that you end up publishing on your website. If you're using tools [...] to get you started, that's not a problem on its own. But it's also not a sign that you've created something that will be considered high-quality content."
