Martech is dead 😵. We must get past this term and realize that our customers are tired of being trapped in Martech. The silos of martech have caused bad customer experiences for years. And it needs to stop 🛑 Your customer and their experience are what matters. And their experience goes far past Martech. Whether you are B2B, B2C, or whatever alphabet soup your business falls into. Your customer’s experience is what drives the whole business forward. When looking at your business in silos, you are ensuring a sub-optimal experience for your customer. From this day forward, I’m hell-bent on killing the term Martech. And finding a new term to ensure we break down these silos and focus on creating better customer experiences across an entire customer journey. #deathToMartech

Dan McGaw's push below to kill off the term "martech" is healthy. It's aimed at the same goal Shelly Eisen-Livneh was highlighting a few weeks ago with her excellent "The GTM Chasm AI SaaS Products Overlook" article: companies need to work in a wholistic and cross-functional way to build experiences that customers love. This is hard to do because of Conway's Law which states that "[O]rganizations which design systems...are constrained to produce designs which are copies of the communication structures of these organizations." Both Dan and Shelly are essentially pushing for what software engineers -- following Conway -- call a "Reverse Conway Maneuver:" make your org structure match the structure of the system you want to build. This is the way.™ Still, LLMs over the long term will change how organizations work and organize themselves, and this will in turn change the challenges and opportunities produced by Conway's Law. Here's one concrete change we're betting on: LLMs will make it possible for marketing teams to build compelling experiences without as much deep collaboration with product and engineering. Much of this current collaboration centers around which events to track in a product, writing code to collect the event data, understanding data quality, etc. Understanding a user's key actions within a product is basically a summarization task, and because LLMs are good at summaries, we think all this collaboration around events will eventually be unnecessary.
