Trump: "They don't fear him" Trump attacked President Biden during the "CNN Presidential Debate": "They (Kim, Putin, Xi Jinping) don't respect him; they don't fear him." Donald Trump draws a clear line between respect and fear. While it's universally acknowledged that mutual respect is a cornerstone of negotiations, the role of fear is a point of contention. Is it a necessary element? Respect refers to the negotiator's personality, including values, experience, and knowledge. Fear is a feeling, a reaction to possible negative consequences. Are Kim, Putin, and Xi Jinping afraid of the possible consequences of the Biden administration? Would they be more fearful of a Trump administration? Fear can be a powerful force in challenging negotiations. Those who can instill a sense of fear in the other party often find it easier to assert their position and achieve their objectives. However, fear can also trigger an emotional overreaction, potentially leading to an uncontrollable situation. A re-elected President Trump would probably spread more fear and create even more uncontrollable situations. picture @CNN

Just from a negotiation point of view, fear may get you somewhere adhoc short-term but it’s not a sustainable tactic. Because, of course, other parties do not like to be overtly threatened into a state of fear. They may submit in the moment, but when they learn that they cannot trust you, they will look for other partners or make affordances that make them more independent or resilient against the fear instilling party. Now, if a party spreads fear far enough (and cannot prevent that the other parties look for alternatives), it will soon be very alone in the world. And with that it will have likely undermined the very power fundament it might have had over others. Power doesn’t need to use fear. In fact seeking to overtly instill fear speaks of the opposite. It’s a signal of low confidence in one’s power.

One convicted criminal, second old man with eldery dementia ~ that's shame for whole US, they are not capable to find a widely respected representative person. As a life-time supporter of US democratic party (and their values) it is pain to see who is/can be in charge in most powerful world's economy for next 5 years. Biden should resign for medical reasons. That's reasonable solution in the first place. ~~~

This is where the beast and beauty sits of making a decision. It clearly shows that there is no such perfect decision and each of them comes at a certain price. In this case, we will face quite substantial consequences of either or solution. And I do agree with the consequences anticipated. Trump will again run a different race. At which he is quite good, whether or not is good for the world economy and peace, that remains to be seen. Thank you for your brain teaser.

Fear should play no role in political leadership and negotiation. However, fear is an immanent part of atomic deterrence: The one who fires first dies second.

Matthias Schranner This opinion is just your opinion! Fact is: Although I am not a fan of Trump, he is the lesser evil. Trump has not started wars, nor has he supplied weapons or is responsible for people killed! He wants to stop what is going on in Ukraine, while everyone else wants to arm themselves and spread war propaganda. Assange's freedom was achieved through Trump's original proposal. His re-candidacy has forced Biden to get one step ahead of Trump to curry favor with voters. We have to be honest here. Trump is merely reminding people of uncontrolled Twitter activity, while Biden is already going down in history for the crime and responsibility for countless deaths. With his embarrassing lie about Netanyahu's peace offer, which Netanyahu clearly rejects. Biden supply the weapons while Jewish presidential candidate Jiff Stein is coming clean about the genocide in Gaza and saying: Criticism of Netanyahu and his hit squad is NOT anti-Semitism. She was beaten and arrested by a police officer with a bicycle during the demonstration for peace. This old man, who stands out for his uncontrolled speech and regular disorientation, is more ready for a retirement home. Who bombed nordstream? Trump is incorruptible.

Hell has been, and still is for many, a fear factor for about 2,000 years. There was a time when people could even buy indulgences, which were promises that they wouldn't go to hell despite having committed sins. Fear is not necessarily something ad-hoc.

Thank you for sharing Matthias Schranner! Many heads of state know from previous experience during Trump’s last mandate that he’s unpredictable. That’s what most of them fear. On top of that comes what you mentioned, the overreaction that he can trigger on other leaders. This is a very dangerous cocktail that can only be partly avoided, when we acknowledge that we are dealing here with an individual with an acute personality disorder. No healthy person would ever dare to lie so blatantly and often in public as he did during the debate.

Like it, Matthias Schranner, and still remember the text we did for a corporate magazine with brandeins back some 20 years ago („Geld oder Liebe“) … understanding your opponent / who is better? J Biden or D Trump?

I remember bits and pretzels several years ago, when you calld Trump a "gambler"- that's exactly how he treats the world and his opponents
