Sometimes a measurement of progress just needs to be a simple discussion lead by the right questions. 💭 A workshop with Year 1&2 on materials earlier this week started with building a simple mind map of what they already knew about materials. Types of materials were suggested and a couple of ways to describe them. ⏩️Fast forward to the end of the workshop, after using the exhibits. Now we can use words of greater complexity to describe materials- like conductor, magnetic, and atoms. Even linking specific materials to specific characteristics. Year 1&2!! Rewarding 💫

Sloan Technical Services' Patented Zapnik (TM) is a self-aligning, telescoping, articulating, pre-rotational-engagement nut which: 1. Is captive to its parent bracket or module thus eliminating fastener handling; 2. Requires NO hand starting, which precludes Repetitive Motion Injury (#RMI); 3. "Pre-attaches" components to their mating module, frame or apparatus prior to rotating the nut (pre-rotational engagement). It is the first and only fastener to engage nut/stud threads prior to rotation and it is the only nut that can retain a component to a stud if the nut or stud fractures or strips. Take a look at the video on “Functionally Graded Materials” by SEAMAC explains the concept, applications and benefits of functionally graded materials (FGMs) in improving material properties and performance. It highlights the manufacturing techniques, in particular the use of Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) and post-processing methods such as Plasma Electrolytic Polishing (PeP) to improve surface quality. We congratulate Franz Krümmling, student in the master program "Electrochemistry and Electroplating" and ZVO | Zentralverband Oberflächentechnik e.V. scholarship holder, on the successful defense of his Master's thesis "Investigation of the pre-treatment to facilitate electroplating on nitrided steel and optimization of a process for coating selective soldering nozzles". For selective soldering, it would be very desirable to manufacture the soldering nozzles from nitrided steel to significantly increase their service life. Since the nozzles have to be coated with nickel and tin before they can be used, careful pre-treatment of the surface is crucial. Due to the passivity of the nitrided surface, this represents a scientific and technical challenge. The work was carried out in cooperation with Prof. Andrew Cobley group at Coventry University and the companies Pillarhouse International Ltd. and TZO Leipzig GmbH. One important aspect of the work is the detailed characterization of the mass removal as a function of the process parameters. This knowledge then formed an excellent base for the subsequent coating processes that significantly increase the lifetime of the soldering nozzles. Track: Technical Program - Light Metals Magnesium metal has been significantly used in commercial applications from automobiles to aluminum alloys to defense weaponry. The surge in structural usage of magnesium over the past years has been due to high strength and excellent stiffness-to-weight ratio. Recycling of magnesium scrap is a crucial aspect of sustainability of economy and environmental welfare. G-METS is an advanced distillation system used in the conversion of low-grade magnesium scrap into high purity magnesium metal. This multiple-effect system uses the weight of magnesium as a compressor, to build pressure differences between each effect of condenser-evaporator, modifying boiling points, and enabling transfer of vaporization enthalpy. This system is exceptionally efficient compared to the energy-intensive conventional distillation technique. This study compares experiments and models of 1 and 2-effect distillers.
