It was a pleasure discussing the overlap between drug discovery and cell therapy at the BioPharma Nexus Conference. In both cases, our goal is to manipulate the function of cells for therapeutic benefit, and many of the same AI/ML strategies that have proven success in one apply to the other. One approach I presented is sequential screening. Here, we test potential drug candidates in small, carefully chosen batches to minimize costs while still rapidly identifying promising targets. Models pre-trained on public perturbation data can be used to determine the most informative set of drugs to test at any given moment, thereby minimizing the number of total batches required. In this strategy, the AI assumes the role of scientific director, deciding which hypotheses to test and how to best allocate limited resources.
