Substack is now "working on more reporting tools that can be used to flag content that potentially violates our guidelines" (!) which is great but can they effectively keep their platform safe, especially during election season? Consequently, some creators are switching to beehiiv. What other newsletter platforms are available? 👀
Substack wanted to be neutral. Its tolerance of Nazis proved divisive.

Great article @Fergus Ryan, especially for those who believe the sky is falling. I’m particularly interested in your reference to the EU’s Digital Services Act and crisis declaration powers. I look forward to your article about that. #misinformation
A lot of people have been freaking out about the government's draft anti disinformation bill. In this new piece I argue that they should calm down.

Interesting. 66% of visits to political content originate from non-news sites. With the political advertising season gearing up, it's time to review your policies. For those that don't want political ads on their sites, don't worry. The Media Trust can block it for you and replace with a more compliant ad. #digitaltrustandsafety #politicaladvertising

Social media platforms fight for the right to control their content moderation policies. “The platforms should prevail even if, as with newspapers, their editorial decisions might indeed discriminate against certain viewpoints. Neither newspapers nor social media platforms are governmental entities, so neither is bound by First Amendment principles… True, speakers might not receive the exposure they crave, but the First Amendment was never designed to ensure all voices are heard at equal volume. The First Amendment only guarantees, in most circumstances, a government-free space to speak.” #firstamendment #socialmedia #contentmoderation

Don't let the "It depends" takeaway stop you from looking closely at this American Political Science Review journal article on political ads. Swayable tested 617 ads produced by 51 campaigns and tested with over 500,000 respondents and there are a lot of fascinating insights here on what persuades voters. I had the good fortune to work last year w/ James Slezak last year and what can be done here in real time to test these ads is absolutely reshaping the landscape because "what works" is shifting just as rapidly from campaign to campaign. https://lnkd.in/guhTfXn4
