Sharing a major milestone for the STARs movement: this week the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced their commitment to STARs as part of the foundation’s four-year commitment to improve economic systems for everyone, especially people experiencing poverty. Why does this matter? Half of U.S. workers are STARs: they’re skilled through alternative routes like military service, community college, workforce training, and on-the-job, often in low-wage roles. Low wage, NOT low skill. A median STAR works 30 years to reach a college grad starting wage: this vast mobility gap is new to our generation. We can do better. With the Gates Foundation’s investment, Opportunity@Work will work towards 3 main goals to tear the paper ceiling: 1. Equip employers with tools to hire STARs into good, in-demand jobs 2. Flip talent systems to inclusion mode 3. Activate STAR talent for emerging industries - from clean energy to data services To learn more about STARs and this announcement - you can watch my interview and read the blog by Ryan Rippel, U.S. Economic Mobility and Opportunity at Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, here: https://lnkd.in/gFECn6Pw #HireSTARs #TearThePaperCeiling
Over $100 million in new partnerships and investments in economic mobility aim to improve the lives of more than 50 million people experiencing poverty in the U.S.

We brought together 13 of the most inspiring change makers in Toronto! (here is the backstory of how we are slowly building community with Leaders of Today) A couple months ago, I connected with Farah Mohamed (CEO at The King's Trust International Canada) after Zabeen Hirji (my mentor) did a post. We met in person with Sarah Vickery and discussed a range of ideas on how we can address various challenges young people face across Canada and beyond. I was then connected with Ampai Thammachack, Ovié Emakpor and Alexandra Samoyloff and we all bonded over ONE BIG IDEA: "How can we bring together the most impactful changemakers in the city?" And the rest was history: No BS, no transactions, no adults in the room - just real, raw and authentic conversation. We talked about the competitive spirit in the space, the challenges we all face and how we can support one another. What inspired me the most: the assets we had together. We mapped down all of our connections and collectively we had access to every major org in the country, every major media outlet, businesses, funders and government. So what next? For starters, we already have an active group chat going. But this is just the start. For the rest of the summer, I plan to formalise and scale community with Leaders of Today. What does this look like in other cities? What does this look like in other industries (tech, creators, entrepreneurs, artists, etc)? How can we create a business model and provide enough value to young people to join us? In the meantime, make sure you check out this ALL STAR LINEUP: Fikayo - solving the homelessness crisis, creator and public speaker Maryam And Nivaal - twin activists, journalists and film-makers Ritika - create community for immigrants through Re-Defined Salma- powerhouse change maker working on various issues including the Palestinian crisis Muzdha Akbari - fighting for girl's education in Afghanistan De-Mario - using public speaking and poetry for IMPACT Ashoke - Author and changemaking redefined what it means to be an environmentalist Tooba Dawood - all-round changemaker empowering young people across the country Khushbu - improving access to mental health services in Kenya Ampai - increase mental health accessibility in Canada Krissan - organising and influencing in the Scarborough region I am so excited to continue building community for young people around the world with Leaders of Today!
