I recently read about the story of "Will it make the boat faster" and was inspired by the thought of it. Such a simple yet most powerful question which led to the Gold Medal in Olympics. Will it make the boat go faster?" is a powerful story from the world of rowing that highlights the importance of focus, determination, and relentless pursuit of excellence. The story revolves around the British men's rowing team's journey to the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Ben Hunt-Davis, the captain of the British national men’s rowing team, faced consistent setbacks in 1998. To deal with the failures, Hunt-Davis came up with one simple rule. With every decision or activity, the team asked a brilliant question, “Will it make the boat go faster?” When facing the dreaded morning run, they asked, “Will it make the boat go faster?” When the team discussed going to the pub, they asked, “Will it make the boat go faster?” The focus of the team quickly moved to a single-minded objective. Yes, making the boat go faster. The result was the British men’s rowing team won the Olympic gold in Sydney, Australia in 2000. The first team to win gold for Great Britain since 1912. This is the approach I take when thinking about staffing, systems and processes, and the 100's of decisions we make every day as we support real estate leaders to increase profit, build wealth, and create freedom at Elite Real Estate Systems Today, look at your calendar for the week and ask yourself what’s causing your boat to slow down. In this interesting article by World of Show Jumping on USA Show Jumping Athlete Cathleen Driscoll, she shared her perspective on team ownership and athlete backing in the US: "I find the owners in the US prefer to back men. I don't know why but I think it's much easier for male riders to get owners and if you have a great team owner behind you and you can have a strong string of horses, you can move up on the ranking list, get into bigger shows, and get better opportunities. I think we are lacking good owners especially for female riders. I think it's harder for us to get owners and it really shouldn't be. I think we are missing out on a lot of talent that just needs opportunity." Despite show jumping sport having exceptional growth similar to the growth now seen in Formula One in regard to investment in elite level competitions, tours, venues, major sponsorship, broadcasting, endorsements, and media deals, Driscoll's statements still ring true. There is a definite lack of diversity among the athletes at the highest level of show jumping sport and a lack of investment into women riders and riders of color resulting in much talent going undiscovered. Success? Or Survival? I've been thinking about this for the last couple of weeks. When is second best good enough? And when should we lower our sights in order to live to fight another day when we are no longer able to achieve our original goal. Often it's not the rational mind that's the barrier for doing this - we usually know deep down what the optimal decision is - but it's the emotional toll of giving up a cherished goal and accepting "second best" that makes us struggle to let go of unrealistic dreams and struggle to motivate ourselves to go after what now seem like less worthy objectives. But sometimes survival can be a triumph, particularly when it's against the odds. Shackleton's escape from the Antarctic in 1915. The Uruguayan rugby teams survival in the Andes in 1972. The Thai boys' soccer team ordeal in a cave in 2018. Even in our own lives, getting through a difficult project, or through a tough time at work, even if the outcome is not a resounding success, is still a triumph of sorts. Live to fight another day. Fight stronger. Fight smarter. And now that's very much how I see my experience on this year's Dragon's Back Race - not a great result and way below my ingoing expectations. But I survived to the finish line, something that felt a long way off when I was lying on my side trying to stave off heat exhaustion on Day 1. 4 continuous days of running. That is what the winner will have to do to win The World Championships of Backyard Ultra. Backyard is a race where runners do 6.71k loop per hour, on the hour, every hour till only one person is left. A last person standing event. World Champs started yesterday in Tennessee. 75 of the best Backyard runners are competiting. 24 hours in. 160k covered. 73 of the 75 still running. But here is a wild thing. There is one winner. Everyone else gets Did Not Finish. But only the winner doesn’t find their limit. Everyone else does. So maybe the winner doesn’t win! Because finding your limit is the real win! Endless loops. Hare - running forward now. Tortoise - running slowly - not sure how to win or the Lion - you know you are a Lion but not sure how to use your power. 𝗥𝗲𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆. The Hare and Tortoise get on a race. The Hare is running away. The Tortoise watches calmly and starts swimming to the finish line. Waits for the Hare and they cross together as friends. What does the Lion do? Drinks coffee and then calmly completes its own race winning it. 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗻. 𝗘𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀.  You can be a Hare, Tortoise, or a Lion. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗲. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆. What do you need to do? Plan. Run the race and win. (Meaning - plan, work hard and succeed.) You can do it dear Lions.
