REDRESS will focus on restoring degraded deep-sea habitats that have great potential to store carbon and mitigate climate change. These habitats, such as sea pens, bamboo corals, coral gardens, cold-water #coral reefs, sponge fields, and cold seeps, have been damaged by deep-sea fishing, particularly trawling. The project will map these degraded habitats and identify areas that could be prioritized for restoration efforts. #Restoration actions will target key deep-sea habitats in nine case study locations across five European Ecoregions, some of which have protection measures in place and strong governmental support, thus the project will also compare restoration approaches in areas with different levels of management restrictions

Purina Europe introduces its first-ever Ocean Restoration program to restore underwater habitats The ocean is vital for all life on earth and the survival of marine life is severely threatened due to climate change and human actions such as pollution and overfishing. Nearly 50% of all oceans have been significantly damaged, resulting in the loss of precious marine habitats. Joint efforts are more important than ever! Today, we are introducing Purina Europe's first Ocean Restoration program. Our goal is to restore 1,500 hectares of marine habitats by 2030. We are joining forces with partners based in the Netherlands @Sea Ranger Service, @Oyster Heaven and European partners @Urchinomics and @SeaForester to help scale up their innovative solutions such as planting seagrass meadows, reconstructing oyster reefs, removing excess sea urchins, and restoring disappearing seaweed forests, which form crucial habitats for marine life, including fish that are part of Purina's supply chain.🌍🐟 Want to learn more about the program? 🌳🪸What is the relationship between reefs and mangroves? 🌱 Today is International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, which means it is an important day for us as well. Mangroves, seagrasses, and coral reefs form co-dependent ecosystems in several coastal areas spread over the globe.  🌊 To start with mangroves and seagrass capture and store massive amounts of carbon. Next to that mangroves play a crucial role in protecting corals from bleaching and diseases through their immense filtering capacity and the cooling effect they have on the water. In return reefs protect mangroves and seagrasses from the offshore swells. Picture this: years ago, in the Philippines where I served as a Peace Corps volunteer, locals would catch fish by hurling sticks of dynamite over the reef. The explosion would stun the fish, making them easy to collect. This method, though less prevalent now, still exists in some regions. But here's the catch: it's devastating to the reef and kills a lot of fish in the process. It's not a sustainable way to harvest and maintain our already stressed reefs, especially in the face of global climate change and other factors. Finally something the UK can be proud of! 👏 Yesterday brought news from the Government of South Georgia and Sandwich Islands, a UK Overseas Territory, that a MASSIVE Ocean space the size of the UK (166,000 sq km) will be put under full protection from fishing! Why does it matter? 🐳 It's one of the most important Ocean spaces in the world 📈 It creates a larger refuge for Ocean life to recover from the worst impacts of mankind and builds on tremendous Ocean conservation work already done by many heroes in that area in the last decade 👊 It shows us what's possible with political and communal willpower. Well done to everyone who worked to make this happen! ⏭ Next stop: UK coastal waters.
