❓ "What, in your opinion, is really needed to bring about the required #sustainabilitychange in the #healthcare sector?" This was the casual, tricky wrapper question to me on Wednesday night's DCAT (Drug, Chemical & Associated Technologies Association) gala dinner five minutes before I left. 😂 My answer: 1️⃣ Speed 2️⃣ Redefining our existing growth and competition models 3️⃣ Stop dealing with sustainability through #decarbonisation silos and start addressing the interconnections of all #planetaryboundaries. Earlier in the day, I had the pleasure to briefly present our recent collaborative partnership with My Green Lab, to show that pooling resources, knowledge and toolkits across companies can help speed up things on the ground; and create a holistic framework for addressing sustainability in the lab that looks beyond purely decarbonisation. My favourite take-away quote was "we have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable". While this statement was said in context of dealing with (data) ambiguity, it is so true for all aspects of sustainability. I saw a lot of uncomfortable faces in the audience when bringing up the true state of our planetary health; and comparing it to an infection spreading through a body and organs failing. Being uncomfortable can be a good thing, as it can incentivise us to drive change. Fear is what we have to be fearful of, as it can lead to irrational (re)actions. So let's leverage this discomfort, together, to speed up diagnostics & treatment, change the business-as-usual, and embrace the different facets of sustainability to stop the infection from spreading. This sector has a lot of work left to do! #wemakehealthecarebetter

Sustainability in Healthcare: Insights from the DCAT Summit in Lugano! Reflecting on two packed days at the DCAT (Drug, Chemical & Associated Technologies Association) Summit in Lugano earlier this week, we're inspired by the collective commitment to sustainability displayed by our healthcare colleagues from pharma, MedTech and CDMOs presenting and attending. Here are some key takeaways from the event:   🔍 Commitment to positive impact: The summit underscored a strong intent from all companies to make a positive impact on sustainability, in one way or another. It was heartening to see examples of harmonized collaboration and partnerships with a shared vision for a sustainable future in healthcare. 🌍 Tangible outcomes and progress: Many companies have already embarked on their sustainability journey, specifically in relation to decarbonization efforts. These efforts highlighted the need for and the importance of accurate GHG data, as well as the link between sustainability efforts and the financials through OpEx and Capex. Our CEO, Christian Hebich, showcased the integration of digitalisation and sustainability in the healthcare value chain, highlighting how digital technologies can contribute to environmental health while driving operational efficiency and a business case. As we leverage digital solutions for sustainability, we need to embrace that sustainability has a positive and secure business case (ROI) despite requiring initial investment as returns do not come immediately. So it is important to prioritise the areas of transformation with the highest impact and return, e.g. R&D labs. Likewise, we need to ensure sustainable change management is available to introduce such digital solutions for sustainability, due to its impact on the entire operating model. ❓ Navigating ambiguities: Despite the progress, there's still significant ambiguity around practically achieving these objectives. Samantha Alex Gordine, our Sustainability Solutions Lead, addressed these challenges in her panel and presented a solution on transforming labs into sustainable work environments. She shared our journey and partnership with My Green Lab, showcasing how collaboration and the pooling of resources and toolkits can overcome some of the practical challenges. We are happy that we addressed the thirst for best practices and open discussions about the challenges ahead on stage and throughout the many networking breakouts. There is still lots of work to be done, and we at Arcondis are there to help! All in all, a fast-paced and insightful event with lots of inspiring exchanges – great to talk to fellow attendees from Siegfried Pharma AG, Roche, Teva Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Olon, DSM, Merck, SHL Medical, Neuland Laboratories Limited and many more, exchanging ideas and strategies to tackle sustainability challenges together. #DCATSummit #Sustainability #Healthcare #Innovation #Networking #WeMakeHealthcareBetter #SustainableLab
