Attending Floating Wind USA 2023, San Diego, USA. This event aims to bring together project developers, industry experts, and other stakeholders to discuss the latest trends and innovations in the floating wind space. With ambitious goals to install 110 GW of offshore wind by 2050 and 15 GW of floating wind capacity by 2035, the U.S. is setting the scene to inject billions into its green economy. But to really shape the floating wind market, U.S. players need to tackle pressing market challenges such as: high cost and risk, lack of transmission and supply chain, or stakeholder engagement. The California lease sale gives the U.S. a chance to lead the emerging floating wind sector.

Oh dear! Another blow for Norway's 1.5GW Sørlige Nordsjø offshore wind tender as EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG has said its subsidiary Norseman Wind AS won't bid due to problems with the regulatory regime. The company was named as one of five pre-qualified bidders last month, but has now said it will not bid in the tender on 18th March because of concerns about the need to build and own the high-voltage interconnector; and limits on state support. This echoes concerns voiced by fellow pre-qualified bidder Shell last month. The silver lining is this indicates EnBW is showing cost discipline in its bids, and ruling out those where it doesn't feel it can make the numbers work. The firm also said it is still committed to the Norwegian market. But we can't ignore the fact that this silver lining comes with a massive cloud. This means the number of engaged pre-qualified bidders in this tender now potentially stands at just three (if we assume Shell won't be bidding), which is looking a little threadbare. Celebrating a Clean Energy Milestone with Vineyard Wind 1! ⚡️🌎 Avangrid's 806 MW offshore wind farm will become the first large-scale offshore wind farm to deliver clean electricity to the US.  Vineyard Wind began construction in 2022 and is on track to deliver power by the end of 2023. The project will strengthen regional economy, improve public health, and expand equitable access to economic opportunities.   WATERFRONT is a stakeholder engagement digital tool that expands informational awareness to offshore wind project activities, including Vineyard Wind. As the project proceeds with final testing, Vineyard Wind sets a precedent in taking steps to reduce its impact on marine stakeholders. Hydro-Québec just released their Wind Power Development Strategy, outlining the deployment of 10 GW of wind projects by 2035. Interesting stuff. I'm curious if they will be able to deliver on such an ambitious plan. With development timelines already taking several years, it will all depend on how quickly they are able to identify planning zones and accelerate permitting and tranmission constraints. Great to see that they aim to include First Nations and municipalities as shareholders to projects as well, ostensibly to address local concerns. Time will tell how successful their strategy will be.
