In support of LGBTQ+ History Month, I wrote a blog about my journey as an LGBTQ+ Ally Wrexham University Here are some snippets below.... Remember we all have a role to play in making and supporting change. "As an Ally, together we can create a more inclusive and accepting workplace and society for everyone. It’s important that people around me feel safe to be their authentic selves, in a place where they spend a considerable amount of time, work...... Being able to actively contribute to a world where everyone can live free from discrimination, is something I have tried to embrace in both my personal and professional life. It’s a fulfilling and enriching journey to be an Ally, one where I am constantly learning, educating myself to understanding and showing empathy and advocating where I can..... Remember, being an Ally is a continuous journey, it’s not a one-time commitment. It’s a journey of self-discovery. I recognise I make mistakes, but I want to learn from them and evolve. I acknowledge I will not get it right all the time but acknowledging that is such an important part of being an Ally. Embrace being an Ally, it’s enriching!" What sets these folks apart from other fabulous options? Me. Let me clarify! Many speakers end up in a large agency because they connect with other large agencies and share talent. But they don't know the talent beyond what they see in the media or what the one pager says about them to help them book more and more. Unlike many speaker agencies, I personally handpicked and KNOW each speaker WELL. For example, I followed two of our James Beard award winners online LONG before they ever had a book. I was talking with them about booking them LONG before the James Beard Foundation had caught wind of them. I reached out to each of them when they were still fine tuning their crafts/niche. I've known them for years now...not as someone to 'pitch' but as deeply talents humans - who also have something profound to talk about. I care about each of my speakers in this same way - as colleagues, friends, people with rich and complex lives. I have had meals with them. Long conversations about family stuff - the good and the bad. I've driven hours and hours to hang with them because I want to KNOW them beyond the pitch to prospects/clients. I have a deep relationship with the individuals on my roster and I'm really proud of that. This PRIDE month, I'm so grateful to KNOW these three speaker options well. "The truth is, LGBTQ+ professionals probably won’t see themselves in the old professional development books about “executive presence.” I sure didn’t. But today, things are looking a lot brighter. There are LGBTQ+ leaders blazing trails as role models for the generations now entering the workforce.
