As a board member, I cannot be more proud of Rebuilding Together Peninsula and the work they do for our community. RTP makes repairs to homes to make them safe for the occupants. Here is a recent example. A woman was living in this home with front steps that were rotting out and getting treacherous. The home was red-tagged due to this hazardous condition. The owner was not able to afford the cost of replacing the stairs, and was faced with having to leave her home of many years. RTP came in and removed the old steps, replacing them with nice, secure new steps and handrails. That made it easy and safe for her to get in and out of her home, and assured that she would be able to remain in the home. This is what RTP does, in a nutshell. They work to make people’s home livable. Each year we accept a number of projects based on need and urgency. Donations to RTP pay for materials, and all labor is donated. The more contributions we receive, the more projects we are able to accept, and also projects with potentially larger scope. As communities across BC grapple with the worst fire season on record, Interior Savings and Gulf & Fraser are joining forces to support the United Way's United for BC Wildfire Recovery Fund. The partnership between the two credit unions will help fund vital needs like food assistance, fuel for generators, trauma and mental health support. A statement from our Honorary Treasurer Gareth Price on our financial situation ⬇ “As Foothold’s honorary treasurer, I know first-hand how important donations and legacies are to funding our life-changing support for engineers and their families. For 134 years, they have helped us ensure no-one in the engineering community has had to face life’s challenges alone. But I’m sorry to have to share with you that today, we’re facing challenge of our own. And I’m speaking to you to personally ask for your help. Since the IET stopped collecting donations for Foothold alongside membership renewals in September 2023, we are experiencing a financial crisis that has left us with a loss of 35,000 donations from our community. This will reduce our charitable income by £350,000, meaning an average of around 992 monthly and one-off grants could be at risk. Leaving some of the most vulnerable members of our community without the support they need to heat their homes, put enough food on the table, or access urgent medical care. And with the continued fall-out of the cost of living crisis, Covid pandemic and international instability, record demand for our support is growing still. Putting us in a situation where we may have to take the heartbreaking decision to limit our support.
