Kotug Canada orders two powerful methanol-fueled escort tugs Kotug Canada has selected Turkey’s Sanmar Shipyards to build two Robert Allan Ltd. designed dual fuel methanol-fueled escort tugs. They will service the Trans Mountain Expansion Project (TMEP), which extends the Trans Mountain Pipeline to the Pacific. The the two RAsalvor 4400-DFM tugs will escort vessels from the harbor limits of the Port of Vancouver to the open ocean through the commercial shipping lanes of the Salish Sea. To provide this service, Kotug Canada has partnered with Sc’ianew First Nation from Beecher Bay, which is strategically located along the shipping route. The tugs are set to be the world’s first large purpose-built high bollard pull methanol fueled tugs when they enter service in 2025 and will provide significant environmental benefits to further reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and underwater radiated noise. https://bit.ly/44KgsJI #methanol #efuel #energy #sustainable #energytransition #futurefuel #cleanfuel #alternativefuel #marine #maritime

Director General, SOS MEDITERRANEE Suisse Co-Director, Center for Humanitarian Action at Sea Co-Director, Qantara Association
ℹ️ GLOSSARY ℹ️ SOS MEDITERRANEE Suisse has chartered the #OceanViking since 2019. Originally built in 1986, the Ocean Viking was designed as a vessel for offshore oil and gas operations in the North Sea. It measures 69.3 meters in length with a total width of 15.5 meters and is registered under the flag of Norway. The ship has been modified to enhance its search and rescue capabilities and to optimize the accommodation of survivors on board. Chartering of ships is an operation involving the rental of a vessel for transporting goods or passengers. The charter contract is called a charter party and it defines the rights and obligations of the parties involved. To succeed in ship chartering, various elements need to be considered, such as selecting the appropriate type of vessel for the cargo and destination, as well as adhering to maritime regulations governing the transportation of goods or passengers, including ship safety, crew safety, environmental protection, and compliance with international conventions. #SOSMEDITERRANEE #OceanViking #MediterraneanRescue #SearchAndRescue #EmergencyResponse #Solidarity #MaritimGlossary

The decline of Hamburg’s container port! 🚢 Long gone are the days when Hamburg was a world-leading cargo-handling port. The loss of Russia traffic is one reason, but more serious is the ongoing decline of container traffic. Some say Hamburg’s container terminals are too expensive, others claim they are too slow. But the underlying problem is that Hamburg is 120 km from the open sea, the river has to be frequently dredged to allow containerships to reach the port, and the channel is too shallow for today’s mega-vessels. When water levels are low and the current slow, e.g. in dry summer months, the river silts up even faster. But more frequent dredging is environmentally problematic. The prospects for Hamburg’s port aren’t too good. #maresystems #hamburg #marine #ocean #onthehighsea #highsea #boat #boats #ship

REMONTOWA Shiprepair Yard launched the first of the series of three Ro-Pax ferries for the Polish shipowners. Part of the contract is a letter of intent containing the option to build a fourth ferry. This is one of the largest orders for a series of passenger ferries of this size in European shipyards, which in recent years - with a few exceptions - have been almost exclusively placed in China. In the current geopolitical situation in the Far East, related to tensions around Taiwan, European shipowners are observing that region with increasing concern, which has created an opportunity to return the production of this size of ferries to Europe. Due to the know-how acquired in this area by the Polish shipbuilding industry in recent years, there is a great opportunity for a new opening. REMONTOWA took up this challenge. These will be one of the most modern vessels of this type, powered by four liquefied natural gas (LNG or bio-LNG) engines with battery support in a hybrid system. https://lnkd.in/dWm6sw7u
