In conjunction with Curtin University, the Australia Africa Universities Network (AAUN) will be running a series of workshops on topics including science, diplomacy, food security and health. CIET Energy Development lead Bishal Bharadwaj will be chairing a workshop on the #EnergyTransition in relation to Africa, also featuring CIET Renewable Energy lead Klaus Regnauer-Lieb. A #JustTransition means that no one is left behind. SUSTAINABLE ENERGY TRANSITION IN AFRICA This morning at the European University Institute in Florence, in the historical setting of Palazzo Buontalenti, I really enjoyed the mind-opener presentation and discussion on #EnergyinAfrica and #EnergyforAfrica with Eni's Lapo Pistelli . Among the key messages debated : - EUROPE & AFRICA are neighbours, and they are COMPLEMENTARY in terms of Energy. - Affordable ad Sustainable ENERGY is the KEY for the Economic Development of the African Continent. - Africa, with 600 million people with no access to energy, needs to deploy NOW all the available forms of energy, including Natural GAS that has still an important role to play in the African development. - The Eni's "Dual Flag" practice in Africa and the need to prioritize the Long-term Value over the short-term profit : a win-win approach. - EDUCATION remains the critical challenge (as Mattei used to stress). It is really needed an exponential growth of Education for the booming new African generations. Engineers, Geologists, ... are critical not just for Oil &Gas but also for the metals that are needed to develop the RENEWABLE Energies. They are necessary to enable the domestic development of the huge potential resources that need to be used " in Africa for Africa". My favourite personal take-away from the session: The KEY need for Education, Educating the Educators in Africa, as the only way to allow the much needed exponential progression.

Great discussions at the #AfricanEnergy Futures Initiative: Powering World Class African Analysis for the Energy Transition #ASC23 event on the need to build the institutional capacity of #LocalResearchers and institutions for energy transition in #Africa! The event is hosted by the #AfricanClimateFoundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, and #EnergyforGrowthHub, represented by #Mawazo co-founder Dr. Rose Mutiso. Some key takeaways from the Clean Air #TaskForce's #ClimateChange and Economic Development in Africa 2023 working paper presented: 1. 63% of #EnergyTransitions studies do not have an African Author 2. Only 10% of energy transition studies on Africa included economic growth and poverty metrics as outcomes of interest 3. 75% of energy transition studies on Africa cited in #IPCC reports are published by only non - African based researchers 4. The majority of African countries have NO published energy transition studies in literature These takeaways only emphasise the need that Mawazo addresses in amplifying the work and voices of African researchers. Ultimately Mawazo believes that African solutions can only come from African researchers. #AfricanClimateSummit23 #AfricanClimateWeek

Beginning today, GlobalAustin, in partnership with American Councils for International Education, is hosting a multi-regional #IVLP delegation from Saudi Arabia, India, Lebanon, Philippines, Hungary, Norway, Kazakhstan, Egypt, Estonia, Israel, Malaysia, Algeria, Ukraine, Romania, Jordan, Türkiye, and Japan for a project titled “U.S. Energy Policy: Security, Independence, and Innovation.”⁠ ⁠ During their time here, the delegation will be impacting the community by:⁠ • Reviewing national and international energy initiatives, security measures, and policies related to resource regulation and development; • Discussing current energy considerations and deliberations with stakeholders and influential leaders in commercial industry, think tanks, lobby organizations, and citizen interest groups; • Investigating strategies for energy resource management, diversification, affordability, consumption reduction, technological advancement, research, and development; • Examining ways to maintain and increase energy security by diversifying energy sources; bolstering energy infrastructure; and forging international collaboration; • Exploring ways to transition away from fossil fuels to the use of renewable energy sources including an examination of the Inflation Reduction Act, which provides for investment into domestic energy production while promoting clean energy; • Examining how federal, state, and local programs are used to incentivize and foment climate action in the United States with an eye toward meeting its net zero commitments under the Paris Agreement; and • Examining the role of academia and research institutions in energy innovation and security. #ExchangesImpact #ExchangeMatters #IVLPCommunity #IAmDiplomacy #CitizenDiplomacy #PublicDiplomacy

Historically, upper-middle-income countries would detain cutting-edge energy technologies, while developing and least-developed countries (LDCs) would rely on North-South technology transfer methods, primarily due to the high development costs. Contrary to this argument are China and Brazil, countries with incredible energetic potential, combined with effective government plans, which brought them to leadership positions in diverse types of green energy sources. They have both developed their technologies to move away from the instability – and high costs – related to import processes. I’m in a private meeting of senior European and African Policy Makers at the #AfricaClimateSummit Here are the three key themes really driving the discussion. 💥 1. Africans don’t see clean energy as a an environmental issue alone. It is one of providing energy to 600m people and jobs for a burgeoning youth population. 2. Europeans see the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism as a good thing for the world. African’s say it’s going to cost them dearly because it’s poorly designed. 3. A year ago Europeans were pushing for Africans to exit gas investment. They are now starting to get that using gas for clean cooking would actually reduce carbon emissions, and that it needs to be a transition fuel.
