Why I would be a great social media strategist for VALORANT Esports: 1) I built the collegiate social brands for three separate Esports teams for League of Legends, Overwatch, and Hearthstone (all while managing them solo). 2) As the Director of Content for the Atlanta Reign Overwatch team, I oversaw all socials for the team's second season of Overwatch League 3) At SteelSeries I managed the brand strategy that all regional accounts followed for product launches and activations. My job was to post on the main global account (1+million followers) and to help regional accounts grown their followings. 4) I grew social accounts for a Mark Cuban start-up including a real-time virtual influencer who was a gamer who garnered 400,000+ followers in our first 6 months of strategy. Some people think that games marketing is dead. ☠ What actually happened is some inaccurate wording and sensationalist headlines. And an awful lot of upset marketing professionals in the midst of mass layoffs. 😩 There was some truth in that conversation but it wasn't about marketing being dead. It was about how marketing techniques and methods have changed in the past 10 years. Obviously, things change. 🙄 Build it and they will come doesn't work. Did it ever work? It didn't work for these gnomes. 🌻 If you have a game or product, you need to tell people about it in order for it to sell. Even just talking about it in the traditional sense is a form of marketing. 🎮 What has changed are the channels and tone that we use. And that's not a new thing, things like social media and influencer outreach have been big parts of games marketing for YEARS! Speaking to your audience with authenticity and creating communities around your brand have been good practise for my entire career. So, before you discredit an entire profession, maybe check for context and actual meaning. Be more specific and don't make headlines just to anger people. #videogame companies take note! Stop hiring from just within the video game market space. There are many people out there with transferable skills which are better suited to your company and will drive far more engagement and sales than some already in the space. Everyday I am seeing companies I previously applied for, employing someone because of their "video game experience" who obviously has no clue when it comes to #communitymanagent #socialmediamarketing or just straight up #marketing and the companies are suffering with no growth or engagement. Start looking for people with fresh skills and experience to transfer into you, experience only obtainable outside the video game space. #jobs #hiring #job #videogames

Today, Facebook reminded me that I would listen to esports podcasts while drafting floor plans for the design firm I worked at right out of school. A few months later, I dived headfirst into esports and gaming and have never looked back. Here are some things that I never expected to happen: - I never thought I’d work in gaming or esports. - I never thought I’d work for a company that provided a service to Riot Games. (Garena) - I never thought I’d live my dream of being a full-time shoutcaster with Riot Games. - I never thought I’d travel the world for my job with my phobia of flying. - I never thought I’d move to Australia, where I am ‘technically’ from. - I never thought I’d move to Shanghai. - I never thought I’d leave my dream job to join a startup funded by FunPlus & NetEase Games and stay in Shanghai. - I never thought I’d come back to #RiotGames in a role that wasn’t as a shoutcaster. - I never thought that I’d get laid off! I’ve talked a lot about how grateful and fortunate I have been for all my experiences, and I still am. But I did have an essential realization during a coaching call with Chris Tran lately that has changed my perspective as of late. Now is a rough climate to find work; every interview or opportunity I’ve come by has been through a referral. And was still phrasing things with a similar ‘I never thought’ like: - I never thought I’d consider this industry. - I never thought I’d be considered for this role. - I never thought I’d take on freelance work. - I never thought I’d consider a contract opportunity. - I never thought I’d relocate away from Singapore again. But now, I’m framing things with a mindset of ‘It would be awesome to explore’ instead, and it has been a game changer: - I’ve interviewed for really unexpected positions I did not consider before that sparked my curiosity only during the process. - I’ve started freelancing and emphasize on freelancing as my go-to instead of a way to make ends meet while job hunting. - I’ve looked at things with a fresher perspective and rolled with ‘let’s see where this goes’ more often than not and have always been surprised with the outcome.
