The introduction of innovative technologies (improvement of the combustion chamber, the introduction of electric hybrid power plants on airplanes, and the use of alternative aviation fuel) will ensure the sustainable growth of air transportation. To assess the effectiveness of advanced technologies, it is extremely important to have a model for calculating global/local emissions that takes into account the parameters of the flight path of conventional and hybrid aircraft, operational characteristics of the aircraft engine and hybrid powerplant, and the features of sustainable fuel. The improved module for calculating emission indices by combining the module for calculating the parameters of the flight path and the results of calculating the thermogas-dynamic calculation of the aircraft engine makes it possible to detect the influence of fuel consumption (engine thrust) on the values of the emission indices. This feature is representative for evaluating the efficiency of hybrid powerplants because the electrification of the aircraft fleet is primarily aimed at reducing fuel consumption. The analysis of simulation results reveals that the fuel consumption and EINOx are significantly reduced (for the climb stage – 25 %; for the descent stage – 30 %) for the hybrid AN26 compared to the conventional AN26. The specified operational measure, in the part of the low-pitch descend, significantly reduces EICO for the hybrid AN26 by an average of 50 % compared to the descend stage for the conventional trajectory. The results of calculations for the entire flight path demonstrate that the use of a hybrid power plant for An26 contributes to an average reduction of fuel consumption by 10 %, NOx emissions by 25 %, water vapor emissions by 10 %, and CO2 by 10 %.

In our approach to inspecting wind turbines, each rotor blade is flown twice: ☝ Once with the standard distance of 7 metres for the conventional inspection to find damage. ✌️️ And then a second time with a distance of only 4 metres. Developed by Airbus, Zephyr is a High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) that has set new records and demonstrated the extraordinary potential of solar power. Zephyr: The Solar Powered Marvel Zephyr operates in the stratosphere, above weather and conventional air traffic, and can continuously fly for months at a time. It achieved 36 days of stratospheric flight across two flights in 2021, setting a new world record for absolute altitude for its class of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) at 76,100ft. The Zephyr S completed a successful 2021 test flight campaign in the United States, demonstrating its operational value to provide instant, persistent, and improved situational awareness. It carries an Optical Advanced Earth Observation System for Zephyr (OPAZ) payload, streaming Earth observation data. The Potentials of a Cost-Efficient Solar-Powered Cell Tower Zephyr’s capabilities extend beyond mere observation. It can serve as a tower in the sky, delivering direct-to-device connectivity with a reach of up to 250 terrestrial towers in difficult mountainous terrain. This makes it a promising candidate for future solar energy applications. High-Efficiency Solar Cells The efficiency of solar cells is a critical factor in the cost-effectiveness of solar-powered cell towers. Researchers at Soochow University have highlighted the potential for significant advancements in solar cell efficiency, focusing on high-efficiency perovskite solar cells. These cells offer high efficiency, exceeding 26% in laboratory conditions, and low cost, using relatively inexpensive materials and simple manufacturing processes. Floating Solar Plants Another promising development in the field of solar energy is the advent of floating solar plants. These plants represent a new renewable energy source that could potentially replace fossil fuels. [Hydrogen] Last week we kicked off a project in partnership with ABYSSA SAS for the Agence Calédonienne de l'Energie - ACE and the Direction de l'Industrie des Mines et de l'Energie de Nouvelle-Calédonie (DIMENC) to demonstrate how new underwater technologies like AUVs and ROVs can be used to precisely detect, map and inspect underwater hydrothermal vents. And did we find some! Using AUV sidescan sonar, a magnetometer, and a few ROVs, we were able to map in new high-resolution detail new hotspots in the New Caledonien lagoon and complete ROV video inspections to verifiy the presence of over 50 hydrothermal vents, known in french as "aiguilles" (needles), of various sizes and ages. We could find a lot of needles in a low visibility haystack! Thanks to this type of flexible technology, in just one day we were able to collect a large amount of very useful data and sites to revisit in greater detail to verify and record hydrogen gas emmisions. An important step towards better understanding our subsea hydrogen resources and its potential role in maritime decarbonization! More cool data to come for this project...
