Breaking Papad with Mrs Murty A few days ago, I had the honour of having lunch with Mrs. Sudha Murty. A few of us were at the table, and after initial pleasantries - where she usually asks about work, our family, and general well-being - she regaled us with anecdotes from her recent travels and latest reading, in her inimitable style. In the midst of all of this she suddenly turned to the basket full of papads and said, “Rishi, I remember you love papad. Your grandfather would keep it next to the plate, and never on it, as do you!” I was gobsmacked. I had probably narrated this tiny anecdote to her several years earlier at the Infosys Foundation office, over lunch. She frequently had lunch with the team, when she was in the office. Those lunches were not only brainstorming and ideation sessions, but also discussions on history, current affairs and books. And in one of those lunches, years ago, I would have mentioned this papad matter in passing. The reason I chose to share this is because it takes a special kind of person to remember these small details about others, genuinely show affection and care, and at the same time, teach you discipline and the value of unconditional hard work. Today, as she scales even greater heights as a Parliamentarian, in her inspirational journey as an author, teacher and philanthropist, I am grateful to her for leading by example in showing dedication, unwavering perseverance, and kindness.
