As someone who often gets asked about making the jump from clinical medicine to health management or digital health, I recently stumbled upon a thought-provoking paper. It made me think differently about the role of clinicians in shaping health-related solutions. 🤔 From my perspective, the paper's key takeaway is that clinical expertise, while crucial, isn't the only thing that matters when you're transitioning into the world of health solutions. It points out that when clinicians work closely with product teams, they need to have a broader perspective that goes beyond medical knowledge. This means understanding not just the users and their journeys but also the nitty-gritty details of the product, technical challenges, and business considerations. 👨💻 This shift in mindset is a game-changer for anyone looking to switch things up in their healthcare career. One of my favorite healthcare hot takes from Knowledgefest was: "In healthcare, matrix organization structures where teams are led by both a clinician and non-clinical operator are often more effective. Non-clinical folks leading without the clinical background can be risky while clinicians leading without non-clinical operators can result in inefficiencies." I thought this was a pretty spicy take. On one hand, blending clinical/ops feels like the right formula for success. We each have different skillsets that come with tradeoffs if a single team is in charge. Plus, to the patient, they can feel one in the same, so it's important to align them internally too. But in my head this also feels like a dumpster fire waiting to happen. I have yet to see a matrix style org work effectively (granted, I have very few examples of this). Lots o' hands in the mix and employees end up confused. I also think that this is just straight up hard. The challenges and needs of a clinical team are really different from non-clinical ones. Trying to blend them together while also recognizing their different business functions seems impossible. I'm really curious to hear if folks have seen this work well and if they'd go to bat for this hot take. I think it could be a really interesting topic for a future Knowledgefest talk too.

THE FUZZY OPEN - BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE I'm excited to 'officially' announce that not-for-profit, human-centred design and value creation group Fuzzy has 'soft launched' an initiative called the Fuzzy Open. This new initiative brings designers, technologists and healthcare specialists together to work in teams on a range of healthcare challenges. Challenges can be condition specific (e.g. cancer, COPD, obesity, mental health etc), population specific (e.g. older people, children, healthcare workforce etc) or trans-sector (e.g. faster triage and diagnostics, access, preventable harm, greener healthcare, joined up and integrated service delivery etc). What you'll get is the chance to connect with other expert practitioners, dig into and research a challenge you're interested in, 'play a problem' and create new solutions, learn new skills and methods, and make a direct contribution to improving healthcare sector. The initiative runs over the course of one year, and includes team and brief formation, research and development, and business casing stages. It is also supported by a talks programme and mentoring. Fuzzy is doing this because it believes that a human-centred, systemic and cross-disciplinary approach is needed if we are to realise the full potential of technologies we have, and if we are to deliver better patient and staff experiences, improve clinical outcomes and increase maximise resources, at scale.
